My daughter did Arlington Travel 08 for a year, but not red or white. we did pool training with the red/white girls and got a number of chances to watch them play. We were lucky enough to have a couple of them help us out in a couple of tournaments when we were shorthanded. They were very talented - noticeably more talented than the girls in the lower tier teams. (some of them had an extra year of travel and academy training, some have more natural talent and some of it is coaching.)
If Alexis is still their coach, he's terrific. Very demanding, but very kind to the girls - he genuinely loves his players. Two of the 09 girls used to play on our rec team (I'm an asst coach) and after a year with him on one of his teams, they were noticeably more skilled and more aggressive. Both stand out on the field in a way they didn't before they started training with him. There is very little movement on red/white from year to year, from what I can tell. There's more movement on the lower teams. I wouldn't let my daughter do a lower-tier travel team again (not worth the money) but i'd let her play for red or white. I don't know how much you can judge from one tournament loss. |
| Most of the Arlington coaches who work with Blue/Black/Silver/Gold either A) don't know how to train individual skills or B) they don't focus on it or C) both. The players on red and white end up moving way ahead of by U12. |
| Most coaches anywhere dont work much on individual skills. Your DC will need to come with fundamentals down or work on them outside of club training to really improve. |
DD is Arlington 08 White, and I can confirm that Alexis is still coaching the 08 Red/08 White. He is a phenomenal coach. He has a tremendous passion for the sport, and really loves coaching. He takes the long view in terms of developing players, and emphasizes possession and ball control over long ball soccer. The girls absolutely revere him. He is professional and has high expectations, but he is also aware that he is coaching 10-11 year old girls. We had a number of girls join both the red and white teams this year from outside the club just so they could be coached by Alexis. He tends to prioritize his Red team if there is a conflict in game schedules, but all practices are joint red-white. I've watched a lot of coaches from other clubs in tournaments and games, and in my opinion, Alexis is in a league of his own. As for movement, three girls moved from white to red, and three girls moved from red to white last year. We also had two girls from white move down to blue, and there were six girls come in from outside and join the red-white teams. So, there was a lot of movement last year. If I had to guess, there may not be as much movement this year, since the girls have one more year of 9v9 on the smaller field. |
What happened to the girl who broke her arm? Is she okay? |
She wasn’t at practice, but the girls said she has a significant break but will not require surgery. Out 6-8 weeks. |
I think the refs at Jeff Cup let too much stuff go and the games get very physical...too physical for the young ages. |
| Can someone rank the best 08 teams in our area (nova) Im guessing Arlington Mclean and loudoun would be top 3. Someone mentioned PWSI? looking at VPL they havent had any real challengers. Asking since tryout are around the corner! Thanks |
This should all go well without a problem at all. |
This is hard to do with much projective accuracy. You can look at current rankings and they will provide a pretty good list of the current best squads but things happen over the next couple of years. Strong programs generally draw talent at older ages. Currently at this age most of the best players are still playing up. In other instances puberty has not yet set in and finally in all instances kids are not playing 11v11 yet. Good teams at 9v9 don't always translate to 11v11 fully intact. That age group at XYZ club may still field a very, very strong team at U14/U15 but the roster will likely barely resemble the current lineup beyond a few core players. Focus on the best training spot for your player regardless of GotSoccer points. |
