It’s a week night. Put down the bottle of whatever and get ready for bed. Have a good rest. |
I think people trying to use the name are missing what's significant. The court decision is significant, not Loving's actions. Especially in view of the fact that she denied her black heritage and her accomplishment was marrying a white man. |
The eye roll emoji isn’t big enough. |
I agree. If they name it Turner High, what is significant won’t be missed for sure. |

That’s what it already is. |
+1 I'm in an interracial marriage with biracial kids. I think it's a terrible name. |
So Washington-Loving should be interpreted as being named after a person and a court case? |
No, that's Yorktown |
Sorry your school of choice didn’t get a pass in Arlington’s favorite game- “who can we accuse of racism next?” |
CNN |
It would be named after Washington, a person, and Loving, another person. I'm saying Loving didn't do anything significant, so the school shouldn't be named after her. What was significant was the Supreme Court's decision in the Loving case because the Justices did the right thing. When I heard the name, I did interpret it as being named after the Washington and the Loving Supreme Court decision. The more appropriate name would be Washington-Loving v. Virginia, which would be a ridiculous name. |

Doesn’t “Loving” refer to both of them, not just the wife? |
I think any name is better than Lee. When I moved here, I couldn't believe how many schools were named for Confederates. I even debated avoiding the school zone altogether, until someone explained that it didn't mean all the people who lived there were racist. People are welcome to think it's a terrible name, but the reasons are stupid. People in history generally don't get to choose their names. I don't think it plays out like this: "Sorry person who sacrificed and made our lives better, we would name the school after you, but we're concerned that teenagers years from now will think it's funny." It's just weird to me how much everyone complains about everything. It's probably because this is an anonymous board, but FFS. |
