I would bet Zimmerman is Hispanic/whatever minority when it is convenient and white/caucasian/whatever majority when it is convenient. This is not the first time we have seen this. No one would admit it. AA moms, I think the white moms are just as furious and perplexed as AA moms as to why this lunatic got away with murder (so far) - literally. The victim was practically a baby. |
Were the perpetrators of this crime allowed to walk free, uninvestigated and unarrested? Because the outrage over the Trayvon Martin case is not because a white Hispanic killed a black boy. It's because a black child was killed because of his skin color and nothing happened to the killer. |
It appears that Zimmerman's mother is Hispanic and his father is a non-Hispanic white man. Police IDed Zimmerman as white; it seems he identified as white up until now. |
I'm sure this has been said over and over, but "Hispanic" is not a racial category. As it says on the U.S. Census, Hispanics may be any race. Race/ethnicity in census terms is "White, non-Hispanic" and "Black, non-Hispanic." One can be both white and Hispanic or black and Hispanic. |
This is absolutely awful and tragic. I hope the perpetrators are caught and brought to justice. But the difference between this and the Trayvon Martin tragedy is that while the perps in Chicago are at large, they're being sought by the police. George Zimmerman was allowed to walk free by this police, and the case would not be being investigating if it weren't for the nationwide outcry at the lack of a proper investigation. |
so do you know the whole story about what happened? Or have you decided that he is guilty before being proven innocent? |

The pp citing the police report said they found Zimmerman lying on the ground next to Martin but that's not actually what the report said. They found Zimmerman standing over Martin's body. It did say that Zimmerman's back was wet and that he was wounded on the back of his head so this suggests that some kind of struggle took place - but gives no evidence as to what kind and who started it. Here is a link to the police report:
http://cnninsession.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/martinpolicreport.pdf What is especially interesting is this report (see link below) from two witnesses one of whom said that the police department blew her off when she tried to give a more detailed report. She reports seeing Zimmerman straddled atop Martin after the shooting. Her view is that that suggests that Zimmerman did not shoot in self-defense. I don't know if we can be sure of that but certainly if I shot someone in self-defense I would not be sitting on top of him, I would be trying to get away. http://www.mediaite.com/tv/anderson-cooper-interviews-witnesses-to-trayvon-martin-shooting/ I think it would help to know where the bullet entered Martin's body and if it was shot at close range. And of course Zimmerman needs to be thoroughly interrogated as well as all of the witnesses should be reinterviewed. Unfortunately, thanks to police ineptitude we won't know as much as we could about what happened. I think one of the only clear things about this case is that the police failed to investigate properly. |

the major problem with this case is that nothing happened to zimmerman.
the investigation and the events during and after the shooting is the injustice. so all these people trying to throw whatever into the disucssion to muck it up, whether this had to do with race or not (it did) or any other factor, the point of it all is that nothing happened to zimmerman. the investigation was garbage or handled very poorly. |
No, I don't know the whole story and have never claimed to. But no one would be searching for the whole story if the national outrage hadn't finally pushed law enforcement into finally investigating the matter. And that's the point. |
| so then what happens if the justice department investigation finds that despite Zimmerman being aggressive in stopping someone he thought was a criminal, he actually did become embroiled in a fight where he felt a significant threat to himself (because he probably was not as good as fighter as he thought) and then acted in self defense by shooting? |
Well, we'll see when/if that happens. |
People mind crime on anyone! If a white guy was wearing a hoodie and walking at night and I guess in a doorway this policeman wannabe might have pursued him as well. Here's a link to a story about a white guy shot by an ex-cop in Florida: http://www.lfpress.com/news/world/2012/03/23/19540936.html Link to all 911 calls- 6 [her kid had been outside ??? and thought Zimmerman was black] . There were people out with flashlights [plural] but only one officer might have been on the scene at the time. Call 8 -brother was outside walking dog-saw Martin and Zimmerman - heard call for help-dog got off leash - heard gunshot while chasing dog. |
Seriously??? So if I thought you were a criminal and started chasing you...and u didn't know who I was...what u wanted.. but I thought YOU were a criminal...attempted to detain you...and u tried to fight me off...I have the right to SHOOT you? You cannot be that dense? |
Actually, under the scenario presented, it would likely come out as self defense. If Z chased T and then T attacted, such that Z thought he was in danger, the self defense doctrine would apply. This is exactly why I think that a lot of the outrage is missplaced. The travesty is that the issue was not INVESTIGATED and that Z was not ARRESTED. It could theoretically turn out that he is not convicted. And if so, I would be fine with that. But he should still be put through the process. |
you cant be that dense to not understand what the stand your ground law allows someone to do then. You do have the right to shoot someone if it can be reasonably shown that you have legitimate fear of bodily harm. This legitimate fear of impeding or actually occurring bodily harm is based on what the normal person would construe it as... who is that normal person? well it could end up to a jury to decide. |
