SR follows Mcps.

SR follows MCPS sometimes. They do until they don't.

They follow MCPS.

I went to a local bar this evening and it was packed. People that actually want to leave the house can do so no problem. The issue is that teachers (and admin) do not want to go to work.

Do these private schools even make up for snow days?

Yes. Do you honestly think private schools have no standards?

+1 we were cleared out Monday morning and looking for places to go since then.

No, you are overly offensive. I just asked a question as ours never made up snow days.

I haven’t left my house since Monday morning when my car got stuck attempting to leave my neighborhood. Not everyone is the same as you.

Private school teacher here.

Unfortunately, my street hasn’t been plowed yet. My driveway is nice and clear… but it takes me to an unpaved stretch of 300 feet. I don’t think my car can handle that, do you?

So I’m not at the bar or the gym. It’s nice that you’re able to get out, but you’re not the only person in this world.

So, like a lazy teacher, I’ve been grading papers at home. I’ve been conferencing with students about recent essays. I’ve been updating curricula. You know… like lazy teachers do when they are unpaid and working from home.

Amazing 🤩

Country club!!

Poors, you are being trolled.

Kids are not encouraged to “hang out” at country clubs. It's not the YMCA. They may be there to use the weight room but there is a reason people pay for country clubs and the atmosphere, and it’s not so it can be used as a playground or a teen hangout spot. - signed member

By hang out, that means doing specific indoor activities with coaching and direct supervision, along with grabbing food from the restaurant. Yes, this isn’t the YMCA and we pay for the amenities like athletic training.

So why didn’t you just say that? And I’m embarrassed for you that you felt the need to bring your country club into discussions about…checks notes…school cancellation.

It’s tacky and you sound like a striver. Money can’t buy you class. -country club member

Well what are your kids doing while off school? The tennis courts are busy today.

God, you are insufferable. Start your own thread about what kids are doing this week. This is a thread about school cancellations. No gives a F what your (or my) kids are doing.

You seem triggered. Perhaps consider what kind of trauma in your past is making you react this way. Nothing wrong with asking what kids are doing during what is looking like 4+ days off.

Get a SUV with AWD if you don’t already. For next time.

Wrong! Many are virtual.

Virtual the same as closed. We learned this during Covid

Except that your kids still have to log on and do work or are penalized.

But then they have to pay attention to them because the nanny is snowed in.

Go away. This isn’t your forum.

Oh, but it is. I'm just a relatively poor rich person that wasn't raised with money, gets my own groceries, mows my own lawn and yes shovels my own snow and ice. I also live with the values of empathy and understanding that my children's $60k a year school professes to teach.

PP hasn't been out their shoveling this mess of ice and has no idea how much sustainwd backbreaking work it entails. They deserve all the contempt and scorn that has been thrown their way and they are an embarrassment to whichever school their children attend.

If you are really that out of shape that you can’t handle a little shoveling for snow and ice removal, you are the embarrassment. Backbreaking work? Not for anyone who takes care of themself. Take the hint and start exercising.

DP. I'm at the gym minimum 5x a week and lift heavy (for a woman). I'm in pretty good shape. I just spent 30 minutes pickaxing my 2-3 in sheet of ice and got through at most a third of the walkway. I'm completely exhausted and now it's dark out. I'll be back at it again tomorrow morning, but this is not easy work.

And before anyone accuses me of failing to use proper technique, I followed capital weather gang's exact shoveling advice and shoveled multiple times during the storm. I ended up with a sheet of ice bonded to the pavement.

That was your mistake. Should have left it till Monday mid-morning.

I’ll remember that next time we have unprecedented ice storms.

This wasn’t unprecedented.

geez, i’m just saying it’s not so easy for everyone to get out of their houses and the streets/sidewalks around the city and the dmv are rough in a lot of places so it’s not just “shovel your way out and it’s great” for everyone. i understand why schools are closed, it’s just not safe.

+1
My street has not been plowed yet (Bethesda). There's a wall of snow and ice that makes it imposible to drive.

Yes, I completely understand that residents are supposed to shovel their sidewalks, but that won't make them magically clear if they haven't, and a lot haven't. You can't just expect kids to walk in the streets as an alternative. (This is why I think the public schools, other than maybe DCPS, are going to be closed all week.) The sidewalk on the main road to our kid's school is now under about 3-4 feet of snow/ice from the snow plow, so there's no way that is getting cleared in the next week given the anticipated cold. Parents/school will get it sorted, but it won't be in the next day or two.

Do people realize how hard it is to juggle the children at home while working? Sometimes solo parenting?

Of course we do. So?

It was treacherous to walk the fog this afternoon. And given that the alleys aren’t cleared by the city, I won’t be getting my car out anytime soon! Even if my block got together and hired a plow, there’s nowhere to put the snow on a ten foot wide alley. Ofc I can put my high schooler in an Uber but it’s not so easy for everyone to just clear it and get on the road.

So what about parents who have to work?

Why do you all keep repeating this? Read the next sentence slowly, as many times as it takes to sink in. Ready?

“The fact that you “have to work” is neither the schools’ responsibility nor their problem.”

They will survive. But it is neither necessary nor very disruptive. Why can't attendance and stuff be optional?

Will “attendance and stuff” be optional for all teachers and staff?

Then no.
