Harvard is a private school. Perhaps you haven't heard?

It is a private school subsidized by generations of American taxpayers.

Which you greatly benefited from. You're just too dumb to admit it.

Just because International students have more potential than your niece doesn't make it wrong for international students to study there. Your niece should work harder. International students shouldn't have to suffer for this.

As an American, I have no personal duty or obligation to international students. My country‘s duty and obligation is to its own citizens.

Getting the best and brightest to live and work in our country is looking out for our country. A lot our scientists are immigrants, many who came here as foreign students.

Spoken like a true hypocritical progressive elitist.

+1. God forbid they take a chance on a kid from West Virginia.

I’m MAGA and I’m anti DEI. That means no kids from WV.

Thousands of students coming from across the globe to be educated in the US, spend tax dollars here, and then contribute to the US economy if they stay; or disseminate US value if they go home.

A true travesty.

Why not have American students take their spot, instead of having to go to Europe for college? Have you not seen all the top stats posts of kids not getting into T20 and going abroad? That's a true travesty as well.

Because your kid is not the best of the best. How many times do you need to be told that?

NP. No dog in this fight (my kids are very high stats but not interested in Harvard for a few reasons) but you have to admit that the lack of places at top colleges is shutting out some really talented kids these days and making it a lottery. I actually think this is a fair move by Trump to put Americans first. The places for international students should be capped at a small percentage like 2-5% that are truly the best of the best.

What I think I hate the most about Trumo is that he somehow sold you on this notion that Americans are owed something. This nationalism that he is selling is so appealing because you think it will get you something. It will not. You might even have a point at public universities, but at private ones "Americans should be admitted first" means nothing. They can choose to discriminate based on whatever criteria they set. And as a result,t they have the top medical and scientific research.

GMAFB

People love to come to America and reap all its advantages. Why are non-US citizens entitled to the same access as US citizens? One could argue that it’s the foreigners who are entitled. Do you think foreign flagships would allow insane numbers of foreigners? I think not.

How many international students do Oxford and Cambridge take in?

This is FOR SURE getting slammed in court. It's not legal. The executive branch of the US government cannot dictate to a private institution of higher learning who it can and cannot enroll.

Do not expect more seats for your US kids, people.

Unfortunately as someone said earlier, the populist message of “foreigners”taking your jobs and stealing spots from white American kids is strong with the weak….

This is not as clever as you think. Protecting the jobs and spots of the weak is paramount in a democracy, and it used to be part of the Democratic plank. The idea that the United States will source the most clever people from all over the world has no natural limit. A clever foreigner can come for your job, too.

I am the clever foreigner that took your job….and guess what? I have been here for 25 years now, married an American, have 3 kids and have probably contributed more in Taxes to this country than most in this thread.

Cool. But did your family pay federal taxes for decades? The same taxes that fund these universities?

I’ll wait.

We’re not here to subsidize universities that prioritize foreigners.

I’m a MAGA and I know how tax money works. I want the best research I can pay for with my tax dollars. If that’s Harvard, then I want Harvard.

Good to know. So have you looked at the numbers and realized how it’s a complete racket? How for every grant dollar the university gets something like 50% of additional money (pretty sure it’s more) is awarded by taxpayers for “overhead?”

That’s the same overhead that “justifies” insane out of pocket tuition costs for US students and means we all have to save obscene amounts for our American kids’ college tuition.

The universities are double and triple
dipping (probably more) from the taxpayer.

I doubt you are MAGA because you aren’t aware of this. Don’t take my word for it—do your own research.

I’d rather have the 6000 slots prioritize to go to American kids.

It's easier to get in from West Virginia, even. It's how I went to a similar school years ago.

I'd even be fine with 10%, but that is plenty. 27% (a recent Harvard number) is completely unnecessary. Also, certain countries are known to produce many applicants who cheat on ESL and other standardized tests. So, getting the "best and brightest" is highly debatable. I teach at a less rarified university and guess who my most frequent AI cheaters are?

ITA. That might actually yield the best and the brightest, if one had any confidence in Harvard Admissions' integrity in selecting them over the children of oligarchs etc.

Hi, I'm a college professor! I don't know this specific Executive Order will go through the courts, but I do think it's more likely that Harvard will open small satellite campuses abroad for the next three years, maybe with the cooperation of other universities, than that it will capitulate to the administration's demands. What the administration is asking for (oversight of curriculum and to install its own people in Harvard's tenured faculty) isn't really doable.

You have no idea how to run a lab, do you???? No wonder you support this nonsense.

Overhead goes to running the electric, and rent, and cleaning people and the rest of the non-sexy stuff everyone has to pay for, you moron.

I'd rather American kids be able to access financial aid, and that not only those whose families can afford $90K a year are able to attend. Right now at all these schools, international students are subsidizing U.S. students.

I am a moderate and far from elitist. My parent were blue collar workers.

What i am is not afraid of my children having to compete with foreigners.

I guess you are intimately acquainted with Harvard's admission process.
