Why do you think this is good? I’m honestly curious. This seems bonkers to me.

Np. There is growing sentiment, across many circles I am in, that American universities should be for Americans. Maybe no more than 5% international. The global vs. homegrown balance has gotten out of whack.

This is a wild swing from the 90s when it was a huge selling point to have kids from as many countries as possible.

Yeah, but maybe the pendulum went too far. 0 isn't right either, but there's got to be balance.

Why do you get to decide how a university runs its admissions

It will be just like everything else he tries. This is all scare tactics and nonsense.

I hope so. Because he's cutting the arms off of one of the best exports and talent acquisition tools we have in America. This is really bad policy.

What, no more Palestinians? You mean every student and Professor will now have to attend classes?

All of this will be challenged in Court where Trump typically loses.

I hear this as well, and not just from MAGA types.

The argument is interesting: universities have been accepting more foreign students to generate revenue, leaving fewer spots for US kids.

OTOH, I assume revenue from the foreign students allows for more aid to the US students admitted.

Tough balance to strike.

Former F-1 student in a US grad school here.

Could you please explain to people in your circle that welcoming international students is a critical long-term cultural and diplomatic opportunity?

Foreigners who come to learn in American institutions are immersed in American values and lifestyles, which by and large they love. Then they return to their home country and spread the word that America is a wonderful place and its citizens are great people. And then those countries become fundamentally more inclined to be friendly, and in case of international conflict with the US, act more cautiously.

Cultural exchange is the bedrock of diplomacy and diplomacy is never just confined to Embassies. American movies, music, food, language, social mores are all extremely powerful export products that significantly extend its political and economic influence everywhere in the world. The more you inculcate foreign students with the notion that America is great, the more the world will look up to you.

Harvard is a private school. Perhaps you haven't heard?

Trump has made our nation the laughing stock of the world. Everyone is standing around witnessing our demise. Stupid people are in the driver's seat and we're headed toward a cliff.

Don't disagree.

Even If you agree with the premise, you do realize this is bananas? That the federal government blackmailing universities to comply with its demands is counter to everything the US stands for? I can’t believe some people are ok with an authoritative regime bc they think it means their kid gets a better shot at an Ivy.

NP: My kids won't ever apply to Harvard. I don't think the way this is being implemented is correct all and agree he is a tyrant.

But the idea that they take so many full pay rich international kids (30% of the entire Harvard student body is international - what!) is not right.
2 kids in college, 1 still to go. None applied to Harvard.
It's just about educating our people first and foremost. I do think that is not a bad thing, and it plays well with American voters. The optics are good politically at home (and that's what matters with voters).

No it isn’t. The order will be immediately enjoined. Harvard will win this in the end. I do foresee fewer international students going forward because of students opting out. More seats for full pay are on the way.

Thousands of students coming from across the globe to be educated in the US, spend tax dollars here, and then contribute to the US economy if they stay; or disseminate US value if they go home.

A true travesty.

I just saw a friend who is a Harvard alum and about to send a kid there. She is very upset by this as she had many international friends while there and really feels that they added to the community.

None of what you've written has anything to do with this though. It's just about putting the squeeze on an institution that's stood to the regime. Justify that with talk about a different issue is just justifying fascism no matter who you voted for. NP.

Why not have American students take their spot, instead of having to go to Europe for college? Have you not seen all the top stats posts of kids not getting into T20 and going abroad? That's a true travesty as well.
