The base is a given. They're in the cult. The only thing that matters is undecided voters in swing states.

The race has fundamentally changed. It’s not just a handful of undecideds. It’s young people who were going to sit out and the double haters. I’ve literally spoken with several young people who went from not voting to volunteering for Harris. The Democratic electorate has grown overnight.

Young people won’t vote. They didn’t in 1972 and they won’t in 2024. Hopefully Harris has some other strategy in the works.

That was before Roe. Young people, especially women, have had their rights taken away. With a woman at the top of the ticket few are going to sit this election out.

You need to stop thinking that is the only reason people will vote for her. I just got back from a vacation with extended family. Politics was discussed quite a bit and there were people with extreme opinions on both sides sharing a house. But on the topic of abortion and women’s rights, three generations of women for different reasons said they had a very hard time supporting the Democratic Party right now. Most vocal was the elderly women present who often spoke about how conflicted they felt. They were pro women and pro women’s rights and wanted to make sure those rights were protected for their grandchildren. They also wanted those rights to extend to sports, and safety and schools. They thought the left has gone too far in many areas where the rights of women are NOT being protected, from immigration to gender issues. I’m not making any of this up and these conversations came up every single day.

Generational self hatred.

Right. Because people should be abortion only voters.

There is much more to women’s rights.

There sure is! Equal pay (which the GOP has fought for decades), protection from domestic abuse (which the GOP has fought for decades), keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers (which the GOP has vociferously opposed), women in sports (the GOP has fought Title IX for decades; don’t let their trans obsession fool you, they think women shouldn’t be playing sports. Too unladylike), prosecuting rape and addressing rape culture (which the GOP treats as a joke) and women in the working world (which the GOP doesn’t think women should do either, at least not the corporate jobs. They’d be happy for women to go back to doing laundry and selling plates of chicken). Oh and yes, that little issue of bodily autonomy which the GOP thinks is a non issue and that women should stop having recreational abortions every week.

The GOP hates women. We’re not people in their party and everyone but Republicans knows it.

He's always been all flash, no cash.

When your message is "I want to be a dictator too," your campaign SHOULD be in a death spiral.

Thank you for sharing this story from your family trip. Obviously, there are a lot of issues women take into account when voting, just like men. I vote not only on women's healthcare and women's rights, but also on gun control, public education, and international relations. All of these things lead me to vote for the Democratic Party, but obviously there are other issues and every person prioritizes those issues differently to come to their final decision on election day.

I would be curious, if you're able to share, how your family members saw women's rights in immigration being a problem for Democrats. Immigration seems to be a problem for every politician (in that all of them get stonewalled when they try to pass any legislation) and, if looking at it specifically as a woman, I see Trump taking babies from their mothers at the border, and as a woman/mother myself, I can't vote for that. But, I know my aunt who lives closer to the border, is much more focused on crime and safety with regard to immigration. I've never considered her concerns to be based on the fact that she's a woman (her husband, my uncle, will make the same crime comments she does), but maybe for her it comes from a place of personal fear for her safety?

So, what rights do they want their granddaughters to have? Are they basically worried about transwomen in sports and bathrooms and immigrants raping? Other than the sports and bathroom controversies (which I consider to be extremely overblown) are they worried that their granddaughters will turn into men?

OMG you can't make this up. GOP has become such an unserious shit show.

It's Hannibal Lecter time now. Only zombie GOP death spirals and reminiscing about pop culture from 35 years ago.

I'm surprised anyone who is not hardcore MAGA is remotely excited about Trump's campaign.

This is just sad. It makes Trump look even older than he is. His legs are so stiff and he won't move them. It makes it look like he's afraid to move his feet/legs lest he fall over. He definitely looks much older and frailer than he even normally does. And he looks like the other guy's grandfather trying to look like he understands what his grandson likes.

If you drive on the Fairfax County Parkway a lot, there are some known Republican sign spots. This year the one that I drive past all the time in Burke/Fairfax Station has signs for Hung Cao, Mike Van Meter (running against Gerry Connolly), aaaaand that’s it. Who could possibly be missing? Whooooo?
