+1 Why did the judges take Jordan's score inquiry if it was 4 seconds after the 1-minute deadline? None of the judges realize it at that time? |
| How can they lower Jordan’s score because the inquiry was late but also be considering the Romanian’s challenges now? |

Wow they (the judges) made a huge mess here and they are resolving it in the worst possible way. What a sour note to end what was otherwise a great Olympics for gymnastics.
I agree with others that they should have resolved it by declaring it a tie and awarding the Romanian gymnast a bronze as well. I absolutely felt awful for her when Chiles petition was successful and knocked her off the podium even though I do think it was the correct decision (Chiles absolutely deserved credit for the move in question and it was annoying that they didn't give it to her in the team final either -- she does it well and I don't get why they wouldn't just give her points for it). It's crap like this that makes people roll their eyes at gymnastics even though the athletes are clearly amazing. It frankly should not be possible -- this is a judge inserting a subjective assessment into what they are trying to make an objective scoring system and it's BS. |
Then the scoreboard shouldn't put participants in order. |
A good question. It's been like 5 days. But apparently 4 extra seconds a mere minute after Chiles stepped off the floor was too long. Hmmm. |
I am guessing that it either was not noticed or was not viewed as a problem (hard to say -- I don't know how much of a stickler they are about the timing of petitions especially for the last gymnast who has less time). But I'm sure the Romanian team was understandably upset and was poring over the results and someone noticed the time and decided to raise it. I don't blame them for raising it but I also think this resolution sucks. I actually just think it's dumb that the last gymnast to go would only have one minute to lodge a petition. If they are worried about having to wait too long to determine final scores they could make the rule be that the judges check in with the last gymnast 60 seconds after she completed her routine to ask if there is a petition and if her coach says no the scores are final and if they say yes they have to produce the petition immediately. Like just be human about it. The current rule relies on the ability of a coach to literally bolt over to the judge's table in 60 seconds. That's stupid. And none of the other gymnasts have to deal with that since they all have 4 minutes to lodge a petition. |
It was filed through a different channel. There was nothing the Romanian team could do on the floor to challenge the decision. They had to petition through the Court of Arbitration for Sport and it took several days for them to make a ruling. |

The participants know damn well how it works. Been to a gymnastics meet before? Even one time? |
+1 I really dislike the judging aspect of many Olympic sports. I just don’t see how the difficulty level of a routine is so subjective that they could leave off a move she did. |
Doesn't make it right. Have a lovely evening. |

Ok. I’ve assisted judges in gymnastics meets. Welcome to gymnastics. |
| Taking away her medal because of the judge's error is a new precedent. They really only do it for bad behavior or cheating. Neither applies in this case. I am curious if the judges will be reprimanded now |
Have they asked her to return the medal or just reinstated the original score? |
