Is Tulane the Ivy League of the South?

Anonymous
UF is.

There is a lot of research going on at UF. We have the Brain Institute. We have a Cancer Center. Etc.

You're right but barely at 99.

Duke is T10 and better than at least half of the ivies.

Don't want to be called some dumb ivy.

Please remove Duke from it.

"Baylor"?

Florida is more like the Michigan State of the south

Emory is better than Rice. Tulane is respectable but not prestigious. Tulane won't be kicked out of the dinner party so to speak.

If the South includes Georgia and Texas, then it is 25) Duke 38) Georgia Tech 50) UT Austin 69) UNC 82) Emory 98) Vanderbilt for the Time Higher Education World University Rankings.

And QS World Rankings is only Duke, UT, and Rice in top 100.

Which makes WM the Brown of the South?

Agreed. Also, Brown is by far the most under appreciated Ivy. It has produced some of the brightest minds in the world. It has also been the go to Ivy for children of Hollywood royalty. (I know everybody says NYU is to go to for celebrities children but that’s not an Ivy)

Yes, Brown is not a graduate school powerhouse, but it has been pretty hot and improving at the undergraduate level for some time now.

LOL, hope your kid is rocking it out at Northeastern and banging all the Boston peeps they can! Maybe some of the Harvard, MIT, BU, BC, and Tufts will rub off on them and they'll get that "I attended school in Boston" trophy!

Harvard isn't even in Boston.

Only Northeastern and Boston University are in Boston.

Lesser known fact: Stanford is not in Palo Alto (it is in Stanford, CA)

Even lesser known fact, Stanford used to be a Junior College but now it is a Junior University.

Lesser known because it is not true. Named for a deceased son (and only child) of Leland Stanford and his wife.

Both are strong regionally and with solid national name recognition. On pure name recognition and prestige, Tulane is probably stronger within its region than Tufts and equal nationally.

No. Tufts is a very serious academic institution. Tulane is not Having similar acceptance rates or rankings in US news doesn’t change the fact

No affiliation with Tufts, but it draws the most serious and nerdy student

No doubt Tufts is objectively more selective but I don't think it is perceived as "better" in most of the country. Tulane has strong name recognition. There are not any Grisham books involving Tufts, are there?

Are you kidding?? I don’t have a kid at either but know both schools well and currently know many kids at both. Tufts is by far the better school with smarter, more serious and truly academic students. Tulane is a party school with smart enough kids who didn’t chose their college for academics reasons. Tufts is also better known and more highly regarded in professional circles. No comparison.

Tufts is a great school, but you are clearly not informed about Tulane's academics and its standing in professional circles. It's far more than a party school for rich kids.

NP, but I, too, had the image of Tulane students being less academically focused. I think of Enory and Tufts as akin. So I checked: Tufts’s admitted student profile for 2021 shows a mid 50% range for SAT of 1490-1540 (Emory’s is identical), vs Tulane’s mid 50% range was 1410-1500. I still think that Tufts attracts the more serious student, but Tulane has plenty of smart kids, too.

Attending or admitted? Also, you need to look carefully at the percentage reporting scores.

For US news it's
Duke 25
UNC 41
Emory 72
Vandy 78
UF 99
QS is biased against US universities

Less than 50% of Tufts students submit scores while over 60% of Emory students do.

No, I disagree that Emory is better than Rice. I think of Rice as in line w the ivies any day. Here on the east coast people are so caught up with the schools here that they may not know what a top notch institution Rice is and how it is viewed everywhere else in the country. While admission rates aren't everything, there was no comparison last year between the two....Emory was at 18.5% and Rice at 8.7%. I mean no disrespect to Emory - it is a fantastic school as well....but not quite up to Rice.

Well I don't think Rice is up there with ivys, except maybe Cornell. Where did you get this info from, Emorys acceptance rate is 11%
