I don't see that at all in FCPS. |
Can someone from the right please explain why conservative parents think they get to ban books for all kids and not just their own?
I get it - you don't want your kids to read certain books. So tell the school they can't check them out or read them. Why do you think you can tell MY kid what not to read when she is at school? That is not your jurisdiction. Stay out of my parenting. These parents in Michigan were trying to get this book banned from the district all together. They complain about the government interfering with their parental decisions. But then they try to intervene in mine. Fascists is what they are. https://www.thedailybeast.com/book-ban-vote-unleashes-mayhem-at-spring-lake-michigan-school-board-meeting?mc_cid=4060cf6815&mc_eid=088700555d

Have you seen the content in that book? It contains images of sexual acts. That is something many parents don’t consider appropriate in a school environment. They’re not stopping you from buying it for your kids, they just don’t think pictures of sexual activities belong in schools. If I had that book on my desk at work I’d be in trouble with HR. |
Our FCPS didn't have a "King and Queen" for HOCO this year. They had "royalty." The two picked out of the senior class ended up being a girl and a boy but it may not have been. And may not be in the future. I was waiting for a collective Conservative head explosion. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't hear it (if it happened). These issues are a much bigger deal for bigoted parents (usually but not always church going types) than the kids. |
They are not displaying the sexual pictures. It's on the book shelves. Your kid can be "forbidden" from taking it out. Buy you have zero right to forbid mine. Does your kid have a phone? Because I have news for you re: that . . . |
Why is it so important to you to have sexual content available to children? |
I’m mostly liberal, but if a book has PICTURES of pornography, it shouldn’t be in school.
Same with playboy etc. That’s common sense. I’m not familiar with that book, so no idea what is actually in it. |
DP. Here’s a crazy right wing site with the images, so yes, I have seen them. And for middle and high school students, I don’t care. Look at it for yourselves. https://theiowastandard.com/shocking-images-from-book-gender-queer-which-is-stocked-in-school-libraries-across-iowa/ If one of my children was non-binary or questioning, what would be the harm in this? You understand how many kids have actually accessed pornography by middle school and high school, do you not? Does that not bother you? Or is it that this seeks to meet kids on their level and help them sort through their feelings that truly threatens you. |
13:36 here. You can see it for yourself. It’s pretty benign and it’s well contextualized, and the images are via a hardcore right wing site so I imagine it’s even better contextualized in the actual book. It depicts a questioning teen (young adult? It’s unclear) in what appears to be caring, loving relationship in which no one is forced. Kids are actually doing these things and it isn’t photos or hardcore. It also isn’t in elementary schools as far as I can tell. I also don’t think a book about being bi/gay/non binary is really going to do numbers regardless of the kind of imagery depicted. This is for the kids who need it and in the poisoned political climate the GOP has brought about, those kids need more support than ever, not having to go to a school guidance officer’s office who will then ask Ma and Pa for permission for the kid to read it. And it’s not just school libraries these fascists are targeting. It’s public libraries and book stores. This is the slippery slope the GOP warned us about. |
I've been a high schooler and I can tell you that high schoolers know about sex. Sorry to burst your bubble about hiding things from your kids. Feel free to tell the school your kid is banned from checking that out. And really. Sexual acts take place in many many pieces of literature that students are exposed to. Maybe you think that because in this book it's a sexual reference, albeit a comic/drawing, that makes it really inappropriate. As opposed to the sex that is implied in The Scarlet Letter. That is your call as a parent. It's naive to think that a 16 or 17 year old is going to be corrupted by seeing a comic drawing. I bet the majority of kids that age have seen way more explicit things than that drawing. Again, you want to ban your kid from seeing that, fine. That is your choice. I am not worried my kids are going to become "loose" or whatever it is you're fearing by seeing such things and reading about them. I know I saw things in my teens more explicit than this book and it didn't make me go out and start sleeping around. By the way, how do you think sex ed should be taught? Without any imagery whatsoever? Sorry, keeping kids in the dark about sex is not a good idea. Your choice as a parent, sure. But not a great thing for society in general and leads to more unintended pregnancies. That is a proven fact. |
I am absolutely troubled by children viewing pornography.
Any and all. I can see where there is a time, age, and place for this. Young people need to have a place that is safe to ask questions. I would like to her from child psychologists on this. |
It’s really weird that you keep calling it pornography, which the internet says is “printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings.” I don’t look at that book and those images and think that’s erotic. What about a bundle of grass looks erotic to you? |
