Diversity brings exposure to different perspectives and backgrounds. This leads to greater empathy and understanding among students.

You realize Cabin John channels students into two different high schools. Who is the genius that thought it is a good idea to split up best friends before they enter the meat grinder of Churchill with the Hoover kids and parents?

100% agree with you that the split articulation was not a good idea but that has been the pattern for at least 20 years, if not longer. Perhaps the Board of Education will consider fixing the problem after the county-wide boundary study.

It’s a terrible idea! Both of my kids had teary good byes with great friends they made at Cabin John and basically had to start all over at Churchill finding a new friend group. And the Hoover kids we’re all able to come in with friend groups intact.

There should be some type of 9th grade bonding experience at Churchill to help with the blending of friend groups to minimize the formation of cliques. In general, the rush between classes and the time spent sitting without being able to talk to classmates creates situations where my boys went most of the freshman year without learning the names of the kids in their classes. The new advisory periods that Mrs. Heckert has started this year might be a place for team building activities during the school day so students can meet one another and make new friends.

Your kids seem a bit dramatic. My kids all went to Cabin John and then to Wootton. It wasn't a problem at all.

That is because 2/3 of Cabin John kids go to Wootton. The kids that splinter off to go to Churchill have to try and mesh with the 100% of Hoover that goes to Churchill.

Are there 3 ESs going to CJ and only one goes to Churchill? I didn't realize that-- I assumed it was 2/2...

Easier said than done.

I can also say that is why "changing the minds of these kids is so critical".

It does not happen by just saying it.

And again, the end does not justify the means.

Adding that mine (several years apart) all stuck with the same closest friends from K-12. Maybe that's unusual.

It was dramatic for my kids. They lost almost their entire friend group. My kids happen to really like the kids who end up going to Wootton. Who knew?
