Another racial incident at Churchill HS

Swastikas drawn on a desk.

Didn't this happen at Bannockburn? Probably a different racial incident at Churchill.

Yes, there was a swastika found in Bannockburn Elementary school's bathroom

https://bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/schools/swastika-found-in-bannockburn-elementary-bathroom/

This has been a problem at many schools in MCPS. At Churchill, the principal called the police and the police said no crime was committed unless there was actual damage to property. A pencil drawing that can be washed off with soap and water is not a crime.

In general, it has been disappointing that the principal and director have not developed a school wide or even a cluster wide plan to address schoose climate problems. The swastikas, the N word passes, and cyber bullying by students are all part of the same problem that simply calling the police won't solve.

I feel sorry for students in Japan, China and other countries with little racial diversity. These students will never be able to learn empathy and understanding.

Bad example. I lived in Japan for a while and it was the most racist place I've ever been.

Kids self-segregate, too.

There will be little to no mixing if this measure is enforced.

Says someone who does not go to a racially diverse high school.

Adults self segregate and teach their children to disrespect the differences that they have little appreciation or understanding of. PP's comment is a throw back to the ideas of the 1960s white flight fear during desegregation.

I was a product of the benefits of busing to achieve racial diversity in the 1970s. I knew students as friends, not because of the street they lived on or the color of their skin but because of their character and intellect. My school did not have the racist comments that students at Churchill feel free to spout off to other students.

I hope PP is not a member of the Churchill community. If he/she is, the viewpoint would explain many of the serious problems in our community.

You’re crazy or naive, I too went to a diverse high school in the early 90s and we had so many people throwing around the N word, drawing swastikas and dicks everywhere they could and girls getting there their tops ripped off and asses smacked. Fights daily, drugs, drugs everywhere along with poor people acting rich and rich kids acting poor. Blair sucked then and it still kind of sucks

Lots of us survived but lots failed too. This utopia you speak of doesn’t exist, you were clearly a girl and oblivious.

Yikes. Was your high school in MCPS?

Totally not my experience but I don't judge people based on zip code, income, or skin color. To say Churchill will end up as perverse as the high school you went to if the BOE changed it's boundaries to allow for greater diversity is craziness and racist.

MCPS has a student code of conduct that is designed to keep a school from becoming the travesty you have described.

Holy moly. That was quite the school.

Reminds me of the HS my grandma taught at in an inner city. No end to the cursing, pushing, stealing, lying.

Or PP is a bigot and had trouble at Blair because of his own hangups with minorities and women. He sounds kind of crazy because no MCPS high school has ever been that bad, including Blair.

Blair is a model magnet school that W school kids are trying to get in. A highly competitive program. How would PP know anything about Blair now if he is part of the Churchill community? He is falsely stereotyping a school he knows nothing about.

Blair envy has become a widesead epidemic among W parents.

PP never identified himself as a parent. Could be a MCPS staff member. Heaven forbid that someone in MCPS has such biases against minorities and women. I hope MCPS is checking the source of the post.

The one thing this thread makes crystal clear is the lack of diversity at Churchill fosters an environment hostile to minorities.

As a minority, I wouldn't want my kids attending a school with this climate, at least not until the county does more to integrate these schools.

Everyone here whining -- why don't you simply send your kids, white or black or purple, to SE DC schools?

Fancy 200-million-dollar buildings looking for students!!

That just is factually incorrect. You are assuming that. In fact, the incidents of racial animosity are targeted at national minorities because races in power still know that the institutions will believe and protect them. In other words, you can be a white child in a majority minority school/team and still reap all the normal benefits of being believed and receiving deference.

My white children in majority minority schools are treated just fine. The stories here and nationwide illustrate the problems in majority white schools.

True but there's this tendency to treat one's personal experience as fact when in fact it's purely anecdotal.

Dr. Moran spoke at the last PTSA meeting. He is the new Director for Churchill. Dr. Moran said the school climate survey of students was bad - as in the data compared to 1960s type of bad. He told parents that the data had been bad for years but no one in MCPS cared to look at it after the data was collected.

I agreed with other parents in the audience that we will believe change when we see change. Dr. Moran hasn't even sent out his Power Point presentation like he promised. How can his promises be accountable if the yard stick is not available to the community?

We should expect better and I know as a community we can do better than this.

I think many parents are skeptical that there will ever be real change at Churchill. That's why so few show up and actively participate in the PTSA. There were principal problems in elementary school just to watch a bad principal get promoted from elementary to middle school. Then there were the high school years under a principal who was absent more than she was present. Through these years, children in the Churchill cluster have experienced racism, bullying, gender inequality, drugs, and teachers who are collecting a paycheck but can't teach the subject they are assigned or who exhibited racial and gender biases. We have seen the revolving door of leadership but rarely is anyone willing to do more to fix problems than to give speeches.

If the county made this a priority, they'd address it.

I'm guessing this isn't being addressed by design.

So you are saying you don’t want to go to the school that you are not wanted at?

Glad you sorted that out, next thing you are going to tell us you don’t want to eat at a Bob’s big Boy

And often oblivious, honestly her child could be picked on and they will still come home and say their day was “fine” like every other kid. White kids aren’t spared in ghetto schools because of white privilege.

These threads are always similar in that the victim is always a minority and the bad guy is a privileged white kid. They think they are woke, but actually hold bigoted views against their own people. Not sure what went wrong, maybe too much MSNBC?

You're crazy.

As in truly crazy.

No, I am not saying that.

Are you crazy?

I'm saying you should be spending more time understanding facts, and less time being consumed by partisan and racist propaganda.

You are not born with a worldview. You develop a worldview over time based on your experience and on FACTS.
