It needs to start at Hoover/Cabin John. The same stuff is happening there. And it needs to be headed off when kids are younger.
You realize Cabin John channels students into two different high schools. Who is the genius that thought it is a good idea to split up best friends before they enter the meat grinder of Churchill with the Hoover kids and parents?
It’s a terrible idea! Both of my kids had teary good byes with great friends they made at Cabin John and basically had to start all over at Churchill finding a new friend group. And the Hoover kids we’re all able to come in with friend groups intact.
There should be some type of 9th grade bonding experience at Churchill to help with the blending of friend groups to minimize the formation of cliques. In general, the rush between classes and the time spent sitting without being able to talk to classmates creates situations where my boys went most of the freshman year without learning the names of the kids in their classes. The new advisory periods that Mrs. Heckert has started this year might be a place for team building activities during the school day so students can meet one another and make new friends.
