Tysons Corner Casino -- Foregone Conclusion Now?

You will not be able to convince me that the economics of casinos were the top issue on which someone should have based their vote for governor. I hate the casino idea but I hate the decimation of the constitution, the economy and public safety that the feds are engaged in way more. And I am glad that we have a governor and other state level electeds to stand up for us now.

I think there are many businesses where costs outweigh the benefits -- e.g., fast food restaurants give people food that makes them fat and causes diseases -- so I guess we need to start getting rid of those also.

Even places like night clubs and concert venues are associated with increased crime, so those should be eliminated as well.

The previous Governor was doing just fine with Virginia's economy, schools, and public safety, in the face of local elected officials like Fairfax's Commonwealth's Attorney. Vote D reflexively, get D policies which actually hurt more people than they help. A casino is a case in point, promoting socially useless activity to provide a few jobs for union members whose dues pay union officials' salaries, officials who make campaign donations to D candidates. And, to raise tax revenue on the backs of people who usually can't afford to lose it gambling, to give it back to them in the form of social welfare programs. A giant circle jerk keeping union bosses and D politicians in power.

We have a state official that is thinking about standing up for us.

But, let me guess, you’ll still be a life long Democrat and pull the D lever no matter what. So, they really don’t care that you hate them.

We can't let Trump win!

Because a casino is a win for libs, right? Generating more tax money to give away. to keep Ds in power? Quality of life for the people in the area is irrelevant. The social non-bewnefits of additional gambling venues is irrelevant. Just keep the revenue machine going, to keep the Ds in power.

And you wonder why you have the state and local government you do.

Thank fking god we just got rid of the trash in state gov't.

Glad we finally have some sanity back.

I was against it I the beginning, but now think the area could use an economic boost. I don’t really gamble, but know plenty of people that do, and they seem normal otherwise. If it can be metro accessible, maybe not bad idea since the hotels are already there. I’d like to see the plans.

What "economic boost" do you anticipate? A minor increase in employment for unskilled workers, and more tax revenue for the Ds to spend on more welfare programs? The tax revenue from a casino won't be used to reduce individual business, personal income, or property taxes, it'll just be additive so even more gov't spending can occur. Most people won't see any benefits whatsoever, just a lot more traffic and congestion, and more low income housing for people who otherwise would have longer commutes to their employment.

Why would you think there would be a lot more traffic? It's not like Tysons is a sleepy little town. It's basically surrounded by major highways and the metro.

Also I assume they will bus people in, and people from the hotels may use it for fun. I doubt it makes a huge traffic impact in that area...

DP but why on earth would you want a casino? Of all the possibilities that could generate economic activity? Whether or not there is an increase in traffic, casinos attract crime and decay.
There are so many better options.

I didn't say I want or don't want a casino- I just said I'm skeptical it will make Tyson's meaningfully more congested. That's the oldest anti-development argument in the book and it certainly isn't relevant to a place like Tyson's Corner.

You can't be serious? Tysons is over-developed as is. Why add a trashy casino to add to the mess?

Bc it's already very developed with multiple major interstates passing around/through it, plus the metro? Seriously a casino isn't going to make traffic worse there. There may be other arguments against it, but that's not one of them.

That's absurd. I have commuted to Tysons for work for years and the traffic is unbearable M-F even after all of the additional lanes, etc.

Hahahaha. All Youngkin did was suck up to Trump as he destroyed federal jobs held by Virginians and ignored the public safety and constitutional protections held by Virginians. Good riddance.

People need to all their state senators to voice opposition to the proposed bills that will strip away local zoning authority. It might start with “housing now”, but it will quickly be repurposed to favor large corporations and special interest groups over local resident quality of life. They will use these state level zoning changes to force a casino in Tysons. Don't give them an inch because they will take a mile through death by a thousand cuts. Maryland has taken away local control over marijuana dispensaries communitues are now forced to approve them in close proximity to sensitive areas. You are going to get apartment towers, heavy industrial development, casinos, and 24 hour bars next to your quiet residential neighborhood if YIMBYs have their way.

it's not YIMBY's, it's Yes in somebody else's back yard, as long as it results in more tax revenue. The D appetite for government spending is boundless, and must be satisfied somehow.

please point me to which bills these are. I don't want Fairfax County to turn into an industrial corporate wasteland with a gas transmission pipeline at my front door, a 150 ft 5G tower abutting my backyard, and data center 50 feet away. Sprinkle a casino on top. My god, did folks vote for a Terminator style hellscape?

Actually, this totally reminds me of Back to the Future 2 in Biff's dirty hellscape, casino and all.

This entire region is on the way to becoming a cultural wasteland. We’ll have a trashy new Casino hotel complex like the one in Hill Valley, but our National Symphony is on the ropes with the closure of the Kennedy Center, which according to the president, he will demolish to the steel structure. But he will keep some of the marble to be reused for the new cultural center he is designing.

Building a casino will play into Trump’s / MAGA’s hands, you’ll see. The Dem pushing it was formerly GOP.

Are you serious comparing gambling establishments with fast food and night clubs There are many families whose lives were destroyed by gambling, maybe try to find someone in your circles to get their opinion on this matter and what it means when someone has a gambling addiction, what these people do to themselves, their families, friends and trusted people. Gambler never just ruins his/her life, they bring down a lot of people with them.
