Maybe an outlier rec player is better than some kids on a 5th team but definitely not 3rd or 4th. And by the way most travel teams are not five levels deep. Maybe Arlington and Loudoun because they are huge and the competition is super tough.

There is a reason incoming rec players moving into travel don't all start on the bottom teams.

Most rec coaches are just glorified babysitters that are trying to make sure his DC has friends to play with. There are some decent rec players but they can’t hold a candle to any mid level travel player. And I guarantee any rec player whose dad is coaching is not even average.

Found the dad paying $4000 a year to drive all around and watch Larlo sit on the bench of the 5th Valor team.
At least he's not a lowlife rec player, though.

Found the dad whose kid is going to have to go out for the field hockey team in high school (and not make it) because Rec Coach Bob couldn't teach his kid to dribble, pass or shoot.

There is zero chance any kid on the 5th travel team is making a large public HS soccer team.
Rec players do make our large FCPS HS team every year.

That's a bold outright lie of a statement. The majority of the FCPS high school soccer teams are almost entirely made up of ECNL National and ECNL Regional players. Parents like you start to scramble to see what (if any) high school sport your kid can play. Inevitably, the rec players all go to field hockey and then get cut after their freshman year.

I have boys, but I am pretty sure teams called "ecnl" are not usually the lower teams in a club.

True, that is why the high school teams are almost exclusively made up from ECNL players. The notion that rec players are making up a large portion of the soccer teams is a fantasy.

Who said "large portion"?

No one. PP said there were a few rec players on their FCPS HS team, and they beat out at least a few low level travel players for spots.
This indisputable fact seems to really bother people. I don't know why.

You know why

This supports the conclusion that Valor will put anyone on their teams....$$$ comes first. Anyone who plays rec for SYA or CYA, you are guaranteed a spot on a travel team for this club.

Most ECNL clubs up to this year frowned upon kids playing HS. So no HS teams in years past were not majority ECNL. Lots of club players. NCSL CCL EDP ect.. some rare rec kids. But ill tell you one thing kids in PW, Osborn for instance, no money for club. But kids destroy most teams

Do not waste your time with Valor and definitely not with CYA. They are the bottom of the barrel clubs in the area. Some have said that CYA uses travel players in their Rec All-stars team and even threatened to call the cops for other parents filming games. Rotten coaches for Valor and CYA. SYA should break off and join Loudoun, Herndon or GFR.

Most rec coaches are generous, community-minded people offering up their time and energy for FREE to coach other people's children. You have a nasty outlook on life, in general, I bet.

I agree. Most rec coaches are really nice moms and dads that want to see their kids have fun on the weekend. This is especially true at the little ages (U5-U8), where the most important part of the game is making sure kids are having fun and having snacks and juice afterwards . But I don't disagree that some of the rec coaches at the older ages can get a little too intense. I have seen rec coaches at the older ages scream and belittle kids, referees (who are also kids usually) and opponents. The rec all-star tournament coaches can sometimes bring out the worst people humanity has to offer. At these older levels you will not see that kind of behavior from 99% of travel coaches. If your kid has any talent and you have the means travel is the better option.

I don't miss rec coaches. One coach bought their own game camera to record all their games shoving opposing parents off the midfield line so they could get the best view of the game... and a couple of the rec coaches would go to other teams' games to watch the competition.... it was extremely cringe and funny enough they were never even the top teams. Screaming wasn't even half the problem.

We have found travel less crazy these past few years thankfully.

Does Valor do team expansion internally or take more external players? I mean going from 7v7 to 9v9 or 9v9 to 11v11? I hear really mixed answers for most clubs on this topic , which is annoying to navigate with tryouts coming up.

They don't want to move kids up if they think the parents will pay for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th teams. Kids coming from the outside won't settle for lesser teams so they get better offers.

History shows they favor external players as roster grows. But they generally at least promote 1-2. All about money.

Wait what??? Who uses travel players in rec tournaments and called the cops for filming a game? Is this throughout the league?

I’ve seen kids from outside get placed on the third team. I’ve also seen kids from outside initially get placed on a higher team, then get dropped down to a lower team mid season. I guess the latter is a way to get the family to pay and then do kind of a bait and switch. Surely that happens elsewhere too?

I’ve heard from multiple sources it is true including higher ups at CYA. Read the full thread here:

https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/60/1168773.page

But here’s clips of what was conveyed at a rec tournament.

“Not Herndon Cup, but I've had rec parents from CYA's rec team (13G Weber) threaten to call the cops on me multiple occasions for filming my own daughter's match. They'd send parents, coach, and CYA staff to demand that I stop filming… Even when the CYA Rec Director got on the phone with the CYA 13G Weber team to tell them filming was permitted and to look around at all the other people with cell phones, they stayed aggressively firm that they were in the right with their demands that I cease recording. "We do not consent" was repeated multiple times.

Others have said that the team may have had travel players who shouldn't be on the team.”

Given alot of clubs have VEOS, Trace and HUDLs. And ive seen them at CYA and Valor games your claims sound suspicious. 2nd they do not let travel kids play rec during season.

Your last point is why they don't want recordings, because travel kids were playing on a rec team in a tournament. It wouldn't be the first and won't be the last time these sort of shenanigans will happen, especially with weaker programs. It's not a far cry from kids that play down in age groups that they have no business being in when player cards aren't involved. Happened every winter in indoor games at the Dulles Sports Plex.
