Most rec coaches are generous, community-minded people offering up their time and energy for FREE to coach other people's children. You have a nasty outlook on life, in general, I bet. |
Found the dad paying $4000 a year to drive all around and watch Larlo sit on the bench of the 5th Valor team. At least he's not a lowlife rec player, though. |
I agree. Most rec coaches are really nice moms and dads that want to see their kids have fun on the weekend. This is especially true at the little ages (U5-U8), where the most important part of the game is making sure kids are having fun and having snacks and juice afterwards ![]() |
Found the dad whose kid is going to have to go out for the field hockey team in high school (and not make it) because Rec Coach Bob couldn't teach his kid to dribble, pass or shoot. |
There is zero chance any kid on the 5th travel team is making a large public HS soccer team. Rec players do make our large FCPS HS team every year. |
Yep. I have one in travel and a younger one in rec. Sometimes we see the older kid rec games when we are at the fields for the younger one. There is more screaming by coaches and parents at the rec games than at my older one's top team travel games. The parents of actual good players stay pretty quiet. I have also noticed this among the parents of the lower travel teams. They are yelling instructions at their kids during practice scrimmages! It's like the adults think that screaming louder and constantly giving instructions will make their kids better players. Meanwhile these poor kids don't know who they should be listening to, and aren't learning how to make decisions on their own. |
That's a bold outright lie of a statement. The majority of the FCPS high school soccer teams are almost entirely made up of ECNL National and ECNL Regional players. Parents like you start to scramble to see what (if any) high school sport your kid can play. Inevitably, the rec players all go to field hockey and then get cut after their freshman year. |
Many younger travel coaches are mediocre babysitters at best, even for top teams. There are a number of clubs losing first and second team players from how shitty the coaching is for the younger players. Mid level travel players only look decent from the above average travel players on the team. Many rec kids can dribble circles around 'mid level' travel kids who are pushed up through the years from doing academy programs as a 7yo. |
I have boys, but I am pretty sure teams called "ecnl" are not usually the lower teams in a club. |
And, I don't know anything about the girls side, but 140+ boys tried out for our FCPS soccer teams and several players from the local rec league made JV. Some club players that we knew from lower teams were cut. So it happened at least at one school. Shrug. I am assuming its easier to make the girls teams with fewer players at tryouts. |
True, that is why the high school teams are almost exclusively made up from ECNL players. The notion that rec players are making up a large portion of the soccer teams is a fantasy. |
Who said "large portion"? |
There is not a huge talent pool in the rec level of play after about U10/U11 timeframe. At least travel players on the lower end are trying to move up. They have more practices, do more training outside of the team, play tougher competition and have better coaches. If it pays off they will be moved up or at least get a chance to guest play on higher teams. Most rec players that are good are not facing anything resembling a competitive team and thus will not improve. |
So you disagree with the statement that there are good rec players who are better than players on 3rd/4th/5th travel teams? |
No one. PP said there were a few rec players on their FCPS HS team, and they beat out at least a few low level travel players for spots. This indisputable fact seems to really bother people. I don't know why. |
