Hayfield Football Coach Fired

Yes, and the Defector article did everything it possibly could to call attention to that without coming right out and saying "FCPS is being utterly shady and doing their best to provide a minimum of information without opening themselves up to legal peril here."

It also appears schools are still contemplating a boycott. What a mess.

The schools threatening are irrelevant. They don’t have the talent to beat Hayfield. They can go out there and have fun, but their chances of winning are slim.

If the schools in the south side of the bracket all boycott, that could shake things up. But those school probably won’t because those teams are more competitive and most of them feel they are capable of beating Hayfield. Heck Madison or W&L isn’t going to take a forfeit either. They probably don’t want to play Hayfield, but I would be surprised if they let the outside drama get in the way of them giving their best effort in their championship runs.

It's not about talent at this point. They are standing on principle. Saying they are sick of FCPS and all te crap they let Hayfield pull. What they did was wrong. Stop trying to make it like these kids are scared of losing. It's ridiculous.

It risks litigation and $$$ you probably rather they spend on education. I know I do. It's too late. They should have acted sooner.

FCPS gets sued all the time, for legitimate and frivolous reasons. Avoiding litigation is a reasonable concern but not their foremost.

Other than Matteo Dunn and the 2 members who voted with him, the school board is very complicit in this and they really aren't taking the fall they deserve over it.

Are they playing football at their new school? Transferred to play a sport. Where is the VHSL investigation about them.

Transfers due to bullying is allowed.

I am sure the fact that the bullying was from an adult employee made it easier.

Pls help me understand that BEFORE a game was even played an alleged case of bullying occurred by a coach and he wasn’t fired. Was the person saying Overton or someone on his staff? Then it’s NOT one case but two, for the alleged same offense, this can’t be possible.

Some kids mom claims he was bullied because she thought her kid would be a starter at Hayfield, but quickly realized there were some better athletes in the position her kid wanted to play. She then transferred him to South County where his starting position is also on the bench and the only time the boy gets on the field is to bring the players on the field water.

Is this family white?
How many of the 30 transfers are black?

Dorsey - the Hayfield to SoCo transfer - is black.

That’s the hilarity of all of these racism claims. Football in PW and FCPS is overwhelmingly black. Go to any youth league game - it’s the center of black family socialization in the fall.

Aren’t the Patriot, Concorde, and Liberty district teams overwhelmingly white, with the exception of the AC Titans? (Of course these districts include Alexandria and Arlington outside of FCPS.)

Nothing. These HS principals, coaches, and parents are working off emotion. I don't have a dog in this fight but FCPS can't do anything now. A court has ruled on the injunctuon. If FCPS tries to act they will just be sued too. The time for FCPS to act was earlier. Now they have to wait until Dec. 4 like everyone else.

FCPS could conduct a real investigation, but they won't. The schools could boycott the playoff games.

That also costs money I as a parent prefer they not spend because my girls go to a FCPS school. Football impacts a small subset of the FCPS population who don't want money going towards an investigation. If Fairfax City who called on it wants to fund it then sure, do the investigation.

I really think it's all some of these people know. Winning and losing and "might makes right."

When their kids were 8 they could have signed them up with a coach who would prioritize integrity and sportsmanship, but they picked a guy who thinks it's fun to run up the score on opponents instead of developing his entire team. They can't conceptualize that there are families, players, coaches, schools, teams, and organizations out there with an entire different philosophy of why do sports.

I'm not saying VHSL as a whole is great at this - there has to be some truth to the rumors about this program and this school and that program and that school recruiting here and there - but there are certainly individual coaches who are.

Who were the two who voted with Dunne?

They can investigate and suspend or expel the students. They can fire the coach. The team would still compete, but without those players or coaches

Not after FCPS already cleared them. I need people to put on their thinking caps. I get that this sucks but let's think people!

The two who voted with Dunne were Ricardy Anderson and Ryan McElveen.

Yes, the one Black woman on the SB was one of the few who stood up and called for a more thorough investigation. Had they listened to her Reid might not be in such a mess right now.

It doesn't go to education. It goes right back in to sports programs.

They are going to be forced to at some point with all the outcry. You can thank them for not doing it when this first was brought to light. It's going to cost more with all the stuff that has come out since this started.

It was last night, but just tried now and has access denied.

By posts in this thread there were many postings, but this was one and yes, now taken down:

Guarantee someone saved it, and guarantee one of the parents slipped up about something related to what VHSL claims

This really seems like the undeniable problem here regardless of the truth about what Hayfield actually did. Whether Hayfield and its coach did all the shady stuff they're accused of, or none of it, or something in between, the FCPS had only done a thorough, public investigation in the late summer, all of this current fuss could have been avoided.

One key failure here, that is entirely the fault of Reid and the SB members who voted against it, is the failure to do a thorough public investigation.

😂 to the post you responded to!

Suspend and expel the students for what for going to the wrong school?

All that happens is the admin informs the parent the kid can’t attend school there and needs to go to their appropriate school

If the student returns to school after that information is given to the parent then technically the student is trespassing on school property if they are inside the building as an unenrolled student at that school.

I mean I know kids can be dumb sometimes we all know they do dumb things but if admin and the counselor bring you to the office say you can no longer attend here if you return tomorrow you are trespassing and can be arrested and taken to jail then even dumb kids know not to come to school

All that said, you can’t suspend or expel the kids for the parents enrolling them at the wrong place that’s not a suspension or expulsion offense.
