The White Lotus season 2

There’s the version of Daphne she mostly presents to the world, which includes her bubbly public persona, her flirtations with her husband, and even the “I make myself happy” and “I don’t let myself be a victim” that she presents the Ethan and Harper. But there is a more vulnerable, hurt version of Daphne that floats below the surface, and you catch glimpses of it here and there. Most recently in the scene with Ethan in the finale when he tells her he thinks something happened between Cam and Harper. It’s this flicker of hurt and sadness before she asserts the version of herself she wants to predominate. You see it in a lot of her interactions with Harper and occasionally it crosses her face in response to things she sees Cameron doing. But then she pushes it under again.

I actually don’t think there’s any one standout scene with Daphne that captures what Fahy is doing with the character. But especially on rewatch, you can really see how she’s creating layers of emotion to this character. I think it’s probably the best performance of the season, maybe rivaled only by Jennifer Coolidge in the last two episodes, which blew me away. This show gives strong actors so much to chew on, it’s really amazing. I think the people who underperformed given the opportunity were Will Sharpe (I kept waiting for it to click but it never did) and Imperioli. They weren’t bad, they just didn’t make the most of it. Fahy and Coolidge really did.

I think Aubrey Plaza was also exceptional, but also her character was more straightforward and her scenes easier to play with less subtext. But I’d still say she deserves her nomination. It’s just that so does Fahy, IMO.

I agree! Fishy’s expressions and use of subtle facial expressions was so well done, so well done in face that a lot of people without high EQ or empathy (a lot on this thread ) missed them. She was fascinating to me to watch. I agree with the mask slipping every so slightly and the putting it back on. The look of pain that flashes fit a second before the swallow and composure again. I do think she was the most complicate.

Ethan and Harper would have been easier to play—anger and disgust is much simpler and there were less layers to their characters.

Is that why Ethan was then able to have sex with Harper and Daphne was able to put her happy wife facade back on?

Yep. And Daphne’s other revenge is having kids with her trainer.

Oh ffs. She did not have kids with her trainer. The trainer was a metaphor.

Did you see Cameron’s reaction when he was flossing and had to FaceTime with the kids?

90% of DCUMlandia dads would have that reaction. I really don’t get how it’s a smoking gun for some people in this thread.

You have never explained why you think Daphne made up a fake person as a metaphor, or what the metaphor even is.

DP. My read of that situation is this: Harper was essentially asking her, how do you deal?! This is so effed up. And Daphne was answering, look at my kids. They’re worth all this and more.

No, she bangs her trainer.

No more Cameron and Daphne. Their story is played out, nothing left to explore.

+1 yeah they were great this season, and i have zero desire for them to return. now that tanya is dead - rip my queen - i'd be glad if it's a whole new cast next time.

they really stuck the landing with this finale.

She snorted enough coke to choke a horse, and she seemed ok considering she’s presumably been clean since her college days and has the metabolism of a late, late middle aged woman.

My guess is they thought she might OD that night in front of a bunch of witnesses.

She’s clearly burned through a lot of crucial brain cells and her asking that question makes me think up until the very end she really only kind of connected the dots. Yes they were trying to kill her, and Greg stood to inherit the spoils, but in her mind, was he really in on it? Poor Greg being taken advantage of by the gays…

If she’d lived she would have gone back to Greg with a story to tell about she saved them both from the gays. It’s like the sad women who can catch their DHs in the embrace of another woman butt naked in the bathroom floor, and the husband can say “it wasn’t me” and the wives by it, anything to preserve the status quo. The Greg was awful to her. Really, really awful.

Being rich, damaged and dumb is such a waste.

she's not that dumb - and you have to admire her shooting skills!

Yeah she’d just say she loves her kids like she has been this whole time.

Agree. Many dads can easily go on vacation without feeling like their heart/womb is back home with the kids. This was push and pull when our kids were very small. My husband was a great dad but could forget about everything on a trip w/out them. I remember a friend’s wedding in another country when I almost didn’t go and my husband thought I was ridiculous. Her kids were very young—baby and 2/3 year old. A week is a long time.

I'm surprised on Fahy - I thought she had way more outstanding scenes than just that. The whole casual calling Cam from the palazzo and then explaining she and Cam both play games. Her slight freakout the next morning when she tells Harper she was really high and tries to minimize what she said. And she had a similar reaction when Harper told her she thought something happened with Ethan and Cam - before she turned as hard as nails. She was masterful in portraying a woman who is constantly working on keeping her mask from slipping, and just when it does, catching herself and putting it right back on.

+1 her scenes stuck out the most to me this season

Agree

Plaza played the same sarcastic syndicalism role as parks and rec. and all my teenagers. It’s not difficult.

The thing is I think she really was trying to show her range and, yikes. Not much substance with her.

I don't agree with that. I think she is heavily associated with her Parks and Rec character, but check her out in Legion. Anyway, I don't think she was channeling April Ludgate here. She's not sarcastic and rolling her eyes. She's just really serious and kind of humorless. She's uncomfortable. She finds it really hard to relax. I thought she played all of that really well.

+1. Tons of eye rolls, shrugs, hands out, snippy hypothetical questions. Repeat.

Harper was 24/7 snarky. No range. There were literally Reddit drinking games for each eye roll per episode. And for the word, “whatever.”

I have. She was making it seem to Harper as is she has some juicy way that she prevents herself from feeling like the victim. She describes her sexy trainer as someone who takes her mind off things. And Harper totally believes it. Then daphne shows her the phone, and it’s a picture of her kids. What daphne meant is that she can have revenge sex with her hot trainer, and perhaps she does, but at the end of the day, she stays for her kids. She loves them and they make it worthwhile for her to put up with her husbands painful infertility. And since she’s made the decision to stay, she does what she has to to make herself feel okay about it. She suggested that Harper too, find something to make her feel better about whatever Ethan might have done. She was suggesting that her kids were fathered by her trainer

Ok, that makes a lot more sense. I will nitpick a little and say that's not saying her trainer is a metaphor though. It sounds like you agree that she's probably sleeping with the trainer but ultimately in her marriage for the kids. And that the kids were fathered by Cameron.

I think it's ambiguous at best, but her message to Harper is to find what will make her happy and concentrate on that.

I don't see any evidence she's staying in the marriage for the kids. I think she genuinely loves Cam and/or she likes the lifestyle, and they have a good time together - and a family together - and she goes out of her way not to see the bad things he's doing because it would ruin all the things she enjoys. So she has outlets of her own. But come on, no one says repeatedly "I am not a victim" unless they're trying to convince themselves.

And 1000000% that kid is fathered by the trainer. There's no metaphor.

It was very obvious that we were suppsoed to think they were the trainer's kids. She describes the trainer "blond, blue eyes" and then says she will show Harper a pic, which is of the blond blue-eyed kid. Cameron's dark look when summoned to be nice to them suggests that he knows about it and it is Daphne's flex on him
