I’ve rewatched most of the season (all but last two episodes) and I think Fahy’s greatest strength is the subtly of how she weaves in Daphne’s layers. Definitely with an assist from Mike White because the camera catches so much of what she is doing.
There’s the version of Daphne she mostly presents to the world, which includes her bubbly public persona, her flirtations with her husband, and even the “I make myself happy” and “I don’t let myself be a victim” that she presents the Ethan and Harper. But there is a more vulnerable, hurt version of Daphne that floats below the surface, and you catch glimpses of it here and there. Most recently in the scene with Ethan in the finale when he tells her he thinks something happened between Cam and Harper. It’s this flicker of hurt and sadness before she asserts the version of herself she wants to predominate. You see it in a lot of her interactions with Harper and occasionally it crosses her face in response to things she sees Cameron doing. But then she pushes it under again. I actually don’t think there’s any one standout scene with Daphne that captures what Fahy is doing with the character. But especially on rewatch, you can really see how she’s creating layers of emotion to this character. I think it’s probably the best performance of the season, maybe rivaled only by Jennifer Coolidge in the last two episodes, which blew me away. This show gives strong actors so much to chew on, it’s really amazing. I think the people who underperformed given the opportunity were Will Sharpe (I kept waiting for it to click but it never did) and Imperioli. They weren’t bad, they just didn’t make the most of it. Fahy and Coolidge really did. I think Aubrey Plaza was also exceptional, but also her character was more straightforward and her scenes easier to play with less subtext. But I’d still say she deserves her nomination. It’s just that so does Fahy, IMO. |
Agree Plaza played the same sarcastic syndicalism role as parks and rec. and all my teenagers. It’s not difficult. |
| *cynical |
The thing is I think she really was trying to show her range and, yikes. Not much substance with her. |
Except for your Plaza take, I agree with all of this. Just, what a delight, to see highly skilled actors knock it out of the park. |
Bingo, she's literally playing herself, down to the dubious Puerto Rican roots. But so many nearly and middle aged millennial women "identify" with her, so they fangirl her. They are also *so* sarcastic and witty, so they rationalize her character cheating on her husband with his college bully as nbd.

I don’t think the plan the whole time was to kill her. Right before Portia called, they looked like they were about to deliver a pitch, like when you go to a university for an alumni event. They started talking about how hard it was to maintain such a place, and reminded her of how much fun she had. She may have just straight up agreed to give them the money if they hadn’t totally scared her. I know we saw the ropes and duct tape, but I’m not convinced they were for sure set on killing her. |

I haven’t read this thread from the beginning but did Ethan and Daphne have sex when she led him out to the island? Did Ethan and Daphne get “revenge” on Harper and Cameron by cheating on their spouses (who they thought had slept together)?
Is that why Ethan was then able to have sex with Harper and Daphne was able to put her happy wife facade back on? |
Yep. And Daphne’s other revenge is having kids with her trainer. |
Oh ffs. She did not have kids with her trainer. The trainer was a metaphor. |
Same, she was wonderful and conveyed so much even without speaking. |
Did you see Cameron’s reaction when he was flossing and had to FaceTime with the kids? |
I just think it's funny that he chooses flossing over his kids. FLOSSING! ha. |
Yes, Cameron is a jerk. We knew that. His kids are an accessory. At least daphne really loves them. |
You have never explained why you think Daphne made up a fake person as a metaphor, or what the metaphor even is. |
