The White Lotus season 2

I loved Fahy but I think Plaza was really good as well. If you have only seen her in Parks & Rec, you probably didn't expect much and might have negative associations (if you didn't like that character I mean -- I didn't really watch P&R so don't have associations one way or the other).

She's very good in Black Bear (from a couple years ago) and I'm guessing her casting was based on her performance in that because her White Lotus character reminded me a bit of that role. Also check out Emily the Criminal, Ingrid Goes West, and from the start of her career, Safety Not Guaranteed. She is a wonderfully subtle and authentic actress. It's nice to see her getting recognition from more mainstream sources for White Lotus after being an indie film darling for many years.

I thought Aubrey Plaza was really good in the show too. It's funny how many people can't appreciate either Meghan Fahy or Aubrey Plaza's performance because they didn't like the character

Is that why Ethan was then able to have sex with Harper and Daphne was able to put her happy wife facade back on?

Yep. And Daphne’s other revenge is having kids with her trainer.

Oh ffs. She did not have kids with her trainer. The trainer was a metaphor.

You have never explained why you think Daphne made up a fake person as a metaphor, or what the metaphor even is.

I have. She was making it seem to Harper as is she has some juicy way that she prevents herself from feeling like the victim. She describes her sexy trainer as someone who takes her mind off things. And Harper totally believes it. Then daphne shows her the phone, and it’s a picture of her kids. What daphne meant is that she can have revenge sex with her hot trainer, and perhaps she does, but at the end of the day, she stays for her kids. She loves them and they make it worthwhile for her to put up with her husbands painful infertility. And since she’s made the decision to stay, she does what she has to to make herself feel okay about it. She suggested that Harper too, find something to make her feel better about whatever Ethan might have done. She was suggesting that her kids were fathered by her trainer

Painful infidelity not infertility

Also meant that daphne was NOT suggesting the kids were fathered by her trainer.

Ok, that makes a lot more sense. I will nitpick a little and say that's not saying her trainer is a metaphor though. It sounds like you agree that she's probably sleeping with the trainer but ultimately in her marriage for the kids. And that the kids were fathered by Cameron.

I think it's ambiguous at best, but her message to Harper is to find what will make her happy and concentrate on that.

Yes, exactly. There’s a lot of ambiguity in this season

Hailey Lu Richardson is a lot more attractive IRL. She has such a great smile.

Apparently Jenna Bush Hager was upset that she twerked 🙄 #UnclechWASPs

She nailed the Gen Z look. She is great in Edge of Seventeen.

I loved Harper. I found her incredibly relatable. She is every highly educated, cynical woman. I thought it was completely out of character for her to cheat with cam though.

I liked both performances and I liked both of the characters. They aren't without flaws, but who is. I will be surprised if Fahy gets no award noms for this role as most of the buzz I've seen is about her especially in this final episode. I thought Aubrey Plaza did a fine job but Fahy did so much with Daphne. Daphne could be another Tanya, but for someone who claims not to pay attention to the news and tries to seem above it all, she comes across as smart and incredibly perceptive.

I totally agree. Pretty boring. Seemed amateur. Like the writer/creator ran out of gas or didn’t know how to wrap things up and his ego wouldn’t let him bring on help.

??? I think she did a crappy job acting but liked her character fine/thought her character was supposed to be one of the relative good guys. In contrast Fahy proved herself to be an incredibly talented actress playing a less likable character.

I'm surprised on Fahy - I thought she had way more outstanding scenes than just that. The whole casual calling Cam from the palazzo and then explaining she and Cam both play games. Her slight freakout the next morning when she tells Harper she was really high and tries to minimize what she said. And she had a similar reaction when Harper told her she thought something happened with Ethan and Cam - before she turned as hard as nails. She was masterful in portraying a woman who is constantly working on keeping her mask from slipping, and just when it does, catching herself and putting it right back on.

+1 her scenes stuck out the most to me this season

Agree

Plaza played the same sarcastic cynical role as parks and rec. and all my teenagers. It’s not difficult.

+1. Tons of eye rolls, shrugs, hands out, snippy hypothetical questions. Repeat.

Which is *so* me.

Signed,
Deluded DCUM harpies who think cruel passive-aggressive sarcasm and a terminally cynical outlook makes them *so* interesting

Bingo, she's literally playing herself, down to the dubious Puerto Rican roots. But so many nearly and middle aged millennial women "identify" with her, so they fangirl her. They are also *so* sarcastic and witty, so they rationalize her character cheating on her husband with his college bully as nbd.

Oh, hey, Aubrey Plaza hater. You're still here, and still on this one? Cool.

I've never seen her in anything before, so it's funny you think I identify with her or I'm a fangirl. I'm just actually able to acknowledge that she discharged her acting responsibilities well in the show. And if you don't know the character's motivations for cheating, you weren't paying attention.

+1, very similar to conversations on here earlier in the season about Portia, with some people saying HLR was terrible on the show because they found Portia annoying. She was supposed to be annoying!

I love that this show gives you women with all their rough edges showing. I mean, men too, but I think we don't get nearly as much of that from female characters on television, who often have to be cute and charming and may only be "flawed" in an appealing way.

Like contrast Fahy's character on the The Bold Type to this show. Same actress, same gorgeous face. And I enjoyed the Bold Type, for the record. But the characters on that show all have to be charming even when they are screwing up, because the show never wants you to lose sympathy for them. But White Lotus asks a lot more of the audience. It seeks to convince you of these characters' humanity even when they are doing deeply unsympathetic things, even when they are dumb or hypocritical. You don't have to like them, but you are asked to recognize their humanity. It's so compelling.

And my god do they all hate a happy pretty girl, with a vengeance! It is your typical RBF (resting b@tch face) poster that thinks she’s more intelligent and “worthwhile” than these women that men love. They can’t admit they’d kill for someone to take care of them and show some affection. They are in sexless marriages with men that won’t have sex with them and dream of (if not actually) banging OW’s husbands…kind of like Ethan sticking it to Cam-to get even. It’s their way of getting back at every popular cheerleader/homecoming Queen or nice girl from high school that guys liked.

You nailed it. Like when Harper called Cameron an idiot. Even though she just had a quickie with him, she deluded herself into thinking she’s smarter than he is. Cameron is a Yale graduate. Presumably a multi-millionaire financier. Happily married, SAHM wife and children (the cheating is just empty calories, he clearly loves his wife). The idiot douchebag who set out and successfully conquered her a few days after meeting her. Yep, he’s an idiot. But the resting b**** face sarcastic attorney in a sexless unhappy marriage, successfully brainwashed by bogus NY Times, NPR, and MSNBC hysteria, and wasting what little is left of her fertility extorting corps for sexual harassment settlements — she is totally not an idiot.

You have the story wrong. It was Dylan and Sheinelle (who are they can be described as a WASP) who jokingly said “this is a Morning Show!”
