Admissions to change at Thomas Jefferson High, and others

The bottom line is simple: FCPS has no obligation to operate a magnet and should not be allowed to do so unless it has a student body representative of the county’s students.

That was true when TJ was majority white, and it is even more true today, when the school is less representative of the county’s population than at any time in its history.

School Board members who allow this to continue should be replaced, just as Ilryong Moon was last year.

IDK if TJ was ever a majority white? TJ is a relatively recent invention, it has been around that long. More thought should have been put into it. IDK if taxpayers shoudl support one school like this - there should be more opportunity in a county that touts itself as so "great". Big and great are very different, in this context.

Adding to the above:

The gender disparity in TJHSST admissions should also be addressed in the overhaul.

I love how all the anti-tj people keep moving the goalposts

The debate about magnet schools is completely different than changing admissions to promote more "diversity"

I would suggest a new thread if people want to talk through this

Just because you believe this is "the bottom line" doesn't mean it is.

TJ was majority-white from its inception in 1985 until about 2010, when the #1 US News/World Report Ranking and the Dulles Tech boom attracted an enormous number of South Asian families to the Ashburn/South Riding/Herndon/Chantilly area. It was probably 60-65% white before that time period, with about 30% Asian and almost entirely East Asian (Chinese and Korean mostly).

The school is now about 40% South Asian - the proportion of East Asians hasn't really changed all that much though the balance has shifted away from Chinese and towards Korean with a few Vietnamese thrown in.

Or there are different types of anti-TJ people - and even (gasp!) pro-TJ people who recognize that the school and its admissions process are deeply flawed and are desperately in need of change for the school to keep up with the changing times.

The Asian enrollment is 70%, NOT 40%. So the big question is, why is everybody so anti Asian? Top schools should be for the top performing kids regardless of race or gender. If you don’t make the cut, you don’t make the cut.

This.

Majority white for 25 years. Asian for the past 10 years.

Ugh sorry ....saw you were only talking about South Asians in regards to the 40%

But it has ALWAYS been biased against girls. Girls have never made up more than 40% or so of the class. If I remember correctly, a few years ago the graduating class was a small as 35% female.

Just because you believe this is "the bottom line" doesn't mean it is.

This thread exists because of the current VDOE review. Change is coming, whether you like it or not.

There will be new conditions imposed on FCPS for operating TJ as a magnet. When those conditions are identified, the School Board should then decide whether FCPS can implement them effectively or would prefer to return TJ to use as a community school. The latter would not be an irrational choice, given the overcrowding in FCPS.
