Student attacked with taser in Oakton HS locker room

I recently watched Alpha Dog. Same kind of kid - “good family” The dad is working all the time to support the country club life for the wife and kids. The mom plays tennis and volunteers. But really the kids are doing their own thing. With no supervision and no consequences.

Wake up, please. It’s ok for your kid to do a year in juvee. Yes, he will get his ass kicked. But it’s a year. If you keep bailing him out, he’ll end up the likes of other notable “good boys” from “good families” - remember George from UVA?

Yes, you failed as parents. It’s ok. You can rebuild - it’s never too late to fix what is obviously broken.

That is so far removed from what anyone actually expects to happen. I mean, terrible behavior, but are you sure you aren’t just indulging in some creepy weird fetishes of your own here?

At any rate, the person who took the video, the person who tased, and the person(s) who restrained should all be expelled from FCPS and criminally charged. Bystanders should be assessed on a case by case basis.

There should have been communication from the school to all students and parents the day in happened. I do not trust the school to handle this situation with a focus on protecting the victim.

Event occurred last Thursday. No school Monday and Tuesday. Student reported to school Wednesday. School parents notified Wednesday.

The school notified parents AFTER a news crew showed up on their doorstep.

Exactly. That was stated in the news story on channel 4. The school admins knew and decided to enjoy their 4 day weekend rather than address this issue. Pathetic.

It sounds like the administrators found out Wed (yesterday), I don’t think they knew last week.

Admin knew last week. Nothing was done and finally someone called the news and they went to the school and started showing parents the video in the kids & ride line. Then, bingo! An hour later, parents get an email and now the school is “investigating.”

This needs to be escalated to the school board. A school that recently experienced tragedy should be more caring and compassionate among its staff and students. Either the admin didn’t know till Wednesday, in which case they are utterly clueless about what is going on at the school and it might be a “no snitches” culture where kids do not trust adults. Or they knew earlier and didn’t communicate to parents and students in a timely manner, which led this to spread for days. Anyone who shared the video should be held responsible for their damaging actions. This should be on their disciplinary record, and emphasized to colleges they apply to.
Day after news report came out, I contacted my FCPS board representative and members at large asking if they were aware of it, what SAR infractions were incurred and to be advised of the consequences, what messaging was being shared with other FCPS high schools. No response back or acknowledgement yet.

My kid wasn't tazed but I'm concerned about the safety of my kid when they attend a Vienna HS next year. What is a rando?

Random person. People got their ass beat all the time in the locker room of the horrible high school that I attended, and nobody got hurt badly. I highly doubt this is some type of pervasive problem. I mean, it's super yuppy Fairfax.

My bet is that the assailants in this case had been misbehaving for years. They need to be dispersed to different schools with clear notice that the next infraction will result in expulsion.

My DC who goes to Oakton says that only the boy who actually applied the stun gun to the victim’s chest has been gone from school. The boys who surrounded and held the victim have never been gone from school, DC says. Some of them got a one day in-school suspension. Has anyone else heard the same?

If that is true, both Scott Brabrand and Jamie Lane should be fired immediately.

FCPS is obviously compromised and will not do the right thing. The right punishment is to expel the main kids that were involved. This was an assault with a weapon. A felony if I am correct. However, they are SCARED TO DEATH of the students or the potential of being sued. They are absolute wimps. Their judgement will always be flawed. If my kid was assaulted, and FCPS did not take it seriously, I would get a lawyer so fast it would make your head spin. They are taking it seriously. This is a fact not an opinion.

A lot may have changed since you graduated - I guess it's fortunate you didn't mention date rape, bullying driven suicide or other assaults that "happened all the time and nobody got hurt badly". You can dodge or slip a punch, getting assaulted w. a weapon, in this case a stun gun is something else, plus it's getting filmed and put online.

I understand that they will not communicate the names and disciplinary actions enforced. They should be communicating very clearly about changes they are making to ensure safety for all students. It needs to be more then just telling students to speak up if they see something. That was not enough in this case and will not work at a school with a culture of assault

I’ve heard little to suggest Oakton has a “culture of assault.”

By the time kids are in the second semester of 9th grade they should be familiar with the SR&R and the anti-bullying policy. If a group of freshmen bully anc assault another freshmen they should be disciplined but it does not mean their behavior is typical by any means.

Do you have a student at Oakton?

Everything I have heard before and since the stun gun video is that it is rough, with regular fights, and that the administration is unhelpful and doesn’t want to listen. Not sure how many assaults have to happen for people to realize there is an issue with the culture, not just at Oakton but several FCPS schools. Parents are upset to see it on video but students are not surprised.

Anyone who has a stun gun in the first place is likely not going to be deterred by the SR&R.

if my kid were assaulted AND FCPS DID take it seriously - I WOULD STILL GET A LAWYER and make heads spin. The parents that let the school deal with this with ISS or 3-5 days out of school are just as bad.
