These sort of comments come up all the time, but in reality there is no fixed line separating "bad abusers" and "good/normal people suffering from depression." I think it's pretty clear (from her court filings) that he fell into a spiral of deep depression and alcoholism that turned him into a parasitic hermit with no interest in anything other than drinking and smoking. Obviously there were MANY bad choices he made along that road, such as refusing to/failing to get proper help, but the idea that this was all part of some master plan is going too far.

And you say this as someone that has been with an abuser or works with abusers....?

This is EXACTLY why women under report abuse.

My ex attempted to kill all of us by driving out car into telephone poles on the way home. When I told him I was going to a hotel with our child that night he ran around and got our child out of the car seat before I could get in the drivers seat and drive away. He then held our child to bait me into the doorway where he proceeded to hit us both with the door. I took the blows as long as I could but I could not reach my child in his arms.

I was bruised head to toe and my child got a head injury.

Every single person that knew us as a couple walked away. Someone, a woman I thought was my friend, also turned on me telling me I would ruin his life. One of his female friends helped him come up with a plausible story to tell court. I used those messages as evidence that git him to not fight the conviction.

Only my young male neighbor that witnessed the after math showed up for court. The other neighbor, 80 year old woman, told me it happens to all women. No big deal.

Do you think that was the first day he abused me? Absolutely not. I was being terrorized for years. Pretty much from the moment he met me. I had an exit plan that I had been working on for about 1.5 years when he finally did that to us.

His punishment? Nothing. He was convicted, that was expunged and voluntarily gave up 50/50 custody.

I lived in fear for years. He terrorized both of us for years after that. I don't think you understand the depth of an abuser. Keep in mind, I wasn't killed (yet?).

Both men saw the end of their political careers, but Northam at least had a legacy of distinguished service to marginalized populations that he could fall back on. Fairfax apparently was a miserable, lying drunk whose own wife installed cameras in her home to protect herself.

Not to excuse what Northam did one bit, but the 80s in the South was a different time. The consensus on blackface being unequivocally bad is a relatively recent cultural development. He was caught flat footed and rightfully paid the price.

Both men saw the end of their political careers, but Northam at least had a legacy of distinguished service to marginalized populations that he could fall back on. Fairfax apparently was a miserable, lying drunk whose own wife installed cameras in her home to protect herself.

It’s not like law firms shy away from aggressive lawyers with checkered pasts - people saw through this guy. All of his charm just hid the fact he was a narcissist who served no one it himself, and when people started to see that, he was cooked. Look at all the “friends” who wanted nothing to do with him after the scandal came out. Everyone suspected it was true.

I 100% do not understand the people saying this is an example of problems with Democrats. As soon as the allegations came out about Fairfax, the Dems dropped him like a hot potato. Unlike people on the right who continue to be embraced despite credible allegations. Dems don’t play with that sh-t. Even Franken, whom everyone liked and who was actually good at his job, got dumped.

It defies credibility. And this is a problem elsewhere in the party too. There were rumors about Swalwell’s behavior towards women for literally years, before he was even a representative. He got taken out by the party apparatus only now because the machine was afraid they’d lose California to the Republican with him on the race.

No, you are not going to convince me the Democrats care at all about the behaviors of their political candidates towards women. The party cares when they need to care, and at no other point.

It’s clear that Fairfax, at one time, was incredibly charming. Many narcissists are. And high end/big money lawyers and prosecutors aren’t known for being docile. Aggression is what people expect and are paying for.

I could see people being taken with him and inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, especially as a young black man with his pedigree.

But it is clear to me that the right people did not like what they saw when Northam was going through his scandal and were determined that Fairfax did not see the governor’s office. Enough people saw enough truth between the Fairfax in office and the Fairfax accused of sexual assault that the allegations stuck. And it turns out, we were all right. The kind of guy who abuses his wife for years and murders the mother of his children is exactly the kind of guy who doesn’t care about consent.
