I walked past the kids' elementary school on my way home. Part of the sidewalk is a little icy but generally safe. Wisconsin is open. The Wisconsin sidewalk is generally safe, except that you have to walk slowly over the bumps of snow. Buses are running. Many kids are out. It is a beautiful day. At least for Northwest schools, Janney, Mans, Hearst, and Murch, I don't see how it is dangerous to go to school tomorrow.

My elementary-age kids go to one of those schools and have been walking there since yesterday to meet up with friends! Our car got plowed in, which was annoying, but it wasn't that hard to shovel it out. All to say, we probably could have had school today even and been fine ...

You can walk what about the employees who must drive. Congrats on your area being clear. It’s amazing to think that others have not been touched at all.

those who has to drive don't have to come to work. Most of the roads near DC is clear.

The roads are clear but the cars are encased in a berm of solid ice.

The wintry mix stopped falling 40 hours ago. Why haven’t people done their shoveling?

You can't "shovel" a wall of solid ice.

I did. You can too!

Yep, so did we.

do y’all want to come over and shovel out my alley in Logan Circle? bc we can’t do half a city block and my neighbors dgaf bc they don’t need to drive anywhere.

Where do you have to drive if you live in Logan?

I have to (yes and choose to) drive my kid to a dc private bc my local DCPS high school has a 70% graduation rate, a truancy issue and the teen pregnancy program on site. Assume that if you’re commenting on school closings on the private school board, your kid likely goes to private school, no?

Then I guess you and your teen need to get out there and shovel.

Precisely. What do you plan to do? Being cozy until next week?

We should shovel ice out of our block
long alley and put it where? Have you ever been in an alley downtown? There aren’t open spaces to put this ice and snow in. And my child will uber when school opens if my car can’t be moved. It’s not a big deal. But lots of people’s cars are blocked in, roads aren’t plowed, many sidewalks aren’t clear. This attitude of get out there and do it yourself is nice in theory but we can’t clear all this cement like ice ourselves.

If you plan to uber, what are you complaining about?

geez, i’m just saying it’s not so easy for everyone to get out of their houses and the streets/sidewalks around the city and the dmv are rough in a lot of places so it’s not just “shovel your way out and it’s great” for everyone. i understand why schools are closed, it’s just not safe.

Wrong! Many are virtual.

Virtual the same as closed. We learned this during Covid

Except that your kids still have to log on and do work or are penalized.

But then they have to pay attention to them because the nanny is snowed in.

Really annoyed Atone Ridge waited so long to make the call. Our cars are frozen in the driveway with a big wall of snow and ice blocking us in.

Why haven’t you cleared this yourself yet? I don’t understand your victim mindset. Just clear it like an adult.

Oh, but it is. I'm just a relatively poor rich person that wasn't raised with money, gets my own groceries, mows my own lawn and yes shovels my own snow and ice. I also live with the values of empathy and understanding that my children's $60k a year school professes to teach.

PP hasn't been out their shoveling this mess of ice and has no idea how much sustainwd backbreaking work it entails. They deserve all the contempt and scorn that has been thrown their way and they are an embarrassment to whichever school their children attend.

If you are really that out of shape that you can’t handle a little shoveling for snow and ice removal, you are the embarrassment. Backbreaking work? Not for anyone who takes care of themself. Take the hint and start exercising.

At $60k, empathy and understanding for whom?

DP. I'm at the gym minimum 5x a week and lift heavy (for a woman). I'm in pretty good shape. I just spent 30 minutes pickaxing my 2-3 in sheet of ice and got through at most a third of the walkway. I'm completely exhausted and now it's dark out. I'll be back at it again tomorrow morning, but this is not easy work.

And before anyone accuses me of failing to use proper technique, I followed capital weather gang's exact shoveling advice and shoveled multiple times during the storm. I ended up with a sheet of ice bonded to the pavement.

I read this as you were annoyed that they waited this long and then announced they were open, and now you have to not shovel in the dark.

But they are closed. So, why are you annoyed?

I would love for school to be open tomorrow, but the reality is that there are still a lot of people--faculty and students--we are still stuck with a lot of areas not plowed. I think another day makes sense especially given the wide geographic area that our school draws from. Our school had assignments go out today and will do the same tomorrow. It worked out to about 4 hours of reading and assignments which is not the same as a regular school day, but it was productive. They are not trying to do the Covid style virtual zoom BS.

As for the people arguing about the snow removal--if your street hasn't been plowed, you are stuck. This isn't a scenario you can fix. It sounds like tomorrow is needed to make the first plow pass on quite a few neighborhoods. But, if your street is plowed(ish) and you have not dug out your car/cleared your driveway, it's time to buckle up and get to work. I finished the clear out today when it was (relatively) warm and the sun was out. Nothing is melting, but it warmed up enough to be able to clear the car and the part of the driveway I need to exit.
