New Additions to Leagues Check Up (ECNL & GA)

as someone somewhat new to all of this, the issues people are talking about is that on the boys side MLS Next is the top league and ECNL is 2nd tier, and on the girls side ECNL is top and GA is 2nd tier (ok, maybe 1.5) and the leagues do not like having clubs having boys teams in MLS Next and girls teams in ECNL?

That’s the kicker. We are in uncharted territories. MLSN has never cared where a clubs girls teams played.

It could change with this GAxMLSN Alliance.

My bet is that more clubs from ECNL will switch to MLSN this year, but the girls somehow stay in ECNL.

I also don’t think ECNL will poach the best remaining clubs from GA this year. Maybe the low hanging fruit like

PBK and SC Surf since they already have their boys in ECNL

Not quite how I'd describe it. In different leagues there are top performers. The top performers would be good in any league. The big difference between GA and ECNL girls right now is that there's more top performer clubs in ECNL. But this doesn't mean that the top clubs in GA aren't really good as well. This is why scouts attend both leagues events.

MLSN + ECNL boys is different because MLSN has fully funded Acadamies and contracts. This doesn't exist for girls. In MLSN Acadamies are like a vacuum that sucks up the best players from any league but primarily MLSN. Because the Acadamies are closely tied to professional MLS clubs it's hard for ECNL to compete. And if an ECNL team does really well MLSN acadamies will just try to recruit their top players.

1. Nothing happens- GA clubs get an invite to Generation Adidas Cup

2. MLSN offers MLSN to clubs with GA/ECNLB

3. MLSN tells clubs with ECNLG/MLSN to switch to GA or lose MLSN

4. ECNL offers GA/ECNLB clubs ECNL on the girls side, while promoting a ton of ECRL clubs

5. GA starts a trend of poaching the highest performing ECRL only clubs that will not get promoted to ECNL.

#1 = GA win
#2 = GA win
#3 = GA win
#4 = ECNL "watering down" itself
#5 = GA not really winning or losing

Sounds like GA is positioned best on the girls side. Really interested to see how this plays out!

So adidas has huge stake/interest In MLSN and now GA. This should continue to drive growth and is probably an impetus for doubling in size, especially with World Cup around the corner. Does another company like Nike make a play for ecnl?

Huh? GA is a second tier girls league making desperate moves after losing many of their best teams last year. They added a ton of mediocre clubs last year and continue to face an uphill battle.

Switch GA with ECNL boys and the statement is true.

City SC, CUP, IMG, TopHat, Lou Fusz, FL United are better clubs than 90% of ECNL… they can all hang with the big dogs…and that’s without having ECNL….

Most clubs would’ve crumbled by now.

Perception isn't always reality. It was already pointed out the there are as many top ECNL boys teams as there are top MLSN non academies and both leagues have similar numbers of teams.

How many kids from boys ecnl teams are on the USYNT? How many are from ECNL? How many ECNL boys are going to D1 colleges or straight to pro.

Unfortunately you failed to add a 6th and 7th- and they are not immaterial in the scheme of things. Clubs will have to decide which gender to prioritize.

6) ECNL yanks girls license from clubs with MLS Next boys. Watch out Bethesda.

7) ECNL tells any club that changes to MLS for boys they lose girls ECNL. Watch out NVA.

Don’t think many clubs willing to risk their girls for their boys tbh.

This feels like a big nothing burger- partnership in name only with #1 being a benefit I guess. But no ECNL girl would trade ECNL showcase with 300+ college coaches for # 1….
