Gov. Youngkin issues statement after DOJ files lawsuit over noncitizen voting in Va.

This is crazy because the law is very clear: no messing with voter rolls within 90 days of a federal election. The state has 640 days between elections to clean up the rolls.

Basically, the SC just invalidated a very straight forward law. By fiat.

Also, I'm worried that this opens the floodgates to other states tossing 10's of thousands off the voter rolls between now and Election Day.

Early vote NOW!

The facts of this are these were self identified non citizens from DMV and you were notified and given 14 days to prove a mistake. What in the issue here! Cannot believe if all the things going on that this is something people want to fight about. If you are not a US citizen you should not be voting. If there was a mistake on you checking wrong box then this is easily fixed.

That's the game plan. Removing voters benefits Repubs.

Who cares about decades of precedent when Trump needs a talking point at an upcoming rally?

Wrong. If you have the same name as someone who is not a citizen (like John Smith) then every John Smith is deemed a non-citizen and sent a purge notice and if you don’t get it and return within 14 days you are off the list. It’s so easy for mail to get lost, especially if you have moved since you last voted.

And it’s all so unnecessary. Again 100% of the voters who got kicked off in PW county were eligible voters.

From a NPR article:
Youngkin sent the notices to old addresses.
Some people didn't get the notice until AFTER the deadline date due to delays in the mail, or they were traveling when it arrived and they missed the date.

Explain how easy this will be fixed. Just a phone call?

whats even crazier is that you don't need photo id to vote in Virginia, it says the following, a fricking utility bill lol which doesn't validate citizenship, so imagine if someone illegally is registered they could vote.

Accepted Forms of ID for Voting:

  • Voter Confirmation Documents: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Voter confirmation documents are issued upon registration, and proof of citizenship is generally only checked at the time of initial registration (not for every voter action).

  • Valid Virginia Driver's License: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Virginia driver’s licenses do not typically require proof of citizenship—just proof of residency in the state.

  • Valid United States Passport: Proof of Citizenship Required: YES. A U.S. passport does require proof of citizenship at the time of issuance.

  • Other Government-Issued ID by the Commonwealth of Virginia or the United States (excluding Driver Privilege Cards and Identification Privilege Cards): Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Most other state-issued or U.S. government IDs, aside from passports, do not require proof of citizenship—only proof of residency or legal presence is needed.

  • Valid Student ID Card from Higher Education Institutions or Private Schools in Virginia: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Student IDs are issued by educational institutions and do not verify citizenship.

  • Valid Student ID Card with Photo from Higher Education Institutions in Other U.S. States or Territories: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Out-of-state student IDs do not require proof of citizenship for issuance.

  • Valid Employee ID Card with Photo from the Voter’s Employer: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Employee IDs are issued by employers to confirm employment and do not require proof of citizenship.

  • A Copy of a Current Utility Bill, Bank Statement, Government Check, Paycheck, or Other Government Document with Voter's Name and Address: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. These documents serve as proof of residence or identity but do not verify citizenship.

  • If an individual is already registered to vote, these forms of ID simply validate their registration on election day; they do not serve as proof of citizenship. Therefore, someone could validate their registration without needing to prove citizenship if they were previously registered through valid or possibly erroneous means. This setup focuses on confirming the identity of registered voters rather than verifying their citizenship status at the polls.

Ultimately, this means that the focus on election day is to ensure registered voters are who they say they are, not to re-confirm their eligibility based on citizenship.

There is no proof citizenship ID other than a US passport. If you want to advocate for a free national ID card available only to citizens, be my guest.

That would be a great idea actually. I remember when I started voting in another state that I needed my card and my license. Not the free for all it has become. I really hope
we go back to one voting day and everyone has off and also absentee ballet. There is definitely skepticism in elections with all the early voting and no id voting and some places saying you do not have to be us citizen for local elections. People want things back to middle and not these polarizing sides.

Republicans have always strongly opposed a national ID card. They absolutely frothed at the mouth whenever it was brought up in the 2000s in response to 9/11.

Because there were a bunch of legal citizens on the list and now they are screwed.

In order to get on to the voting list to begin with, you provide proof if citizenship. So all the other doom you express is BS.

    This.

They don't want a national ID card for privacy issues. They make getting a legal ID difficult for people who don't have cars or need a drivers license, and it costs money. Voting is a right, so it shouldn't cost money to prove you can vote. A free card is the way to go, but the GOP opposes it. They are trying to have it both ways and it is sickening that legal valid voters are being denied their constitutional rights.

This SC will rubber stamp every one of Trump's bad ideas. We cannot let this continue.
