Governor Glenn Youngkin issued a statement Friday afternoon after being notified that the Biden-Harris Department of Justice was filing a lawsuit against Virginia. “With less than 30 days until the election, the Biden-Harris Department of Justice is filing an unprecedented lawsuit against me and the Commonwealth of Virginia, for appropriately enforcing a 2006 law signed by Democrat Tim Kaine that requires Virginia to remove noncitizens from the voter rolls - a process that starts with someone declaring themselves a non-citizen and then registering to vote. Virginians - and Americans - will see this for exactly what it is: a desperate attempt to attack the legitimacy of the elections in the Commonwealth, the very crucible of American Democracy. With the support of our Attorney General, we will defend these commonsense steps, that we are legally required to take, with every resource available to us. Virginia’s election will be secure and fair, and I will not stand idly by as this politically motivated action tries to interfere in our elections, period.“ So, what’s Youngkin talking about? This: https://www.npr.org/2024/10/11/nx-s1-5150774/the-justice-department-says-virginia-is-illegally-striking-voters-off-of-voter-rolls RICHMOND, Va. — The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Virginia election officials Friday that accuses the state of striking names from voter rolls in violation of federal election law. The lawsuit filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Alexandria says that an executive order issued in August by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin requiring daily updates to voter lists to remove ineligible voters violates federal law. The National Voter Registration Act requires a 90-day “quiet period” ahead of elections for the maintenance of voter rolls. “Congress adopted the National Voter Registration Act’s quiet period restriction to prevent error-prone, eleventh hour efforts that all too often disenfranchise qualified voters,” Assistant U.S. Attorney General Kristen Clarke said in a statement. “The right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy and the Justice Department will continue to ensure that the rights of qualified voters are protected.” A similar lawsuit was filed earlier this week by a coalition of immigrant-rights groups and the League of Women Voters. Non-citizens do not have the right to vote. Why is the DOJ going to bat for non-American citizens to vote? |
I am guessing they are "inadvertently" removing citizens too. It happened to me in 2013, the last time we had a Republican governor. |
“The agency alleges that Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin violated the NVRA when announcing and subsequently carrying out an executive order which required the election commissioner to regularly update the state’s voter lists to remove individuals who have been "identified as noncitizens," and had not responded to a request to verify their citizenship in 14 days.” Were you identified as a non-citizen, and did you receive a request to verify your citizenship you didn’t respond to? Because that’s what VA is doing. They are only removing voters who have been identified as non-citizens and haven’t responded to verify their citizenship. |
Under Youngkin's executive order, Virginia has removed 6,303 individuals.
"The Executive Order formalized the Program and announced that 6,303 individuals had been removed from the rolls pursuant to the same process between January 2022 and July 2024," the complaint said. The complaint notes that voters were identified as possible noncitizens if they responded "no" to questions about their citizenship status on certain forms submitted to the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). "This systematic voter removal program, which the State is conducting within 90 days of the upcoming federal election, violates the Quiet Period Provision," the DOJ said. The people being removed have self identified as non-citizens. |
Why did they wait to clean the voter rolls? |
Presumably because more non citizens are added every passing week. |
They are |
My friend was removed from the voting roll. Took some energy to restore her name, but she had the time, energy and wherewithal to fight back. She was born in the USA. Both parents born in the USA. Both sets of grandparents born in the USA. In fact, she can trace her family tree to a Georgia plantation. Mighty white of you to think that the voting purge is happening to only non-Americans. |
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/justice-department-sues-virginia-voter-rolls-election-day-rcna175117 What Youngkin is doing is illegal. GOP does not care about rule of law |
They are removing legal voters and the time to do this is not when early voting has already commenced.
The whining is akin to all of Trump's whining. |
I recall that Kobach's attempt to purge names also overwhelmingly targeted any hispanic and asian names in particular and many citizens got dropped and struggled to be reinstated. This isn't about illegal voters, it's about Republicans cheating to win. |
Yes. She still carries her ex-husband’s last name. He is Nigerian, so not an Anglo name. Woo, must be illegal, red flag. Mind you she has voted for years and this year she is suddenly flagged. GTFOH. |
Youngkin committed voter fraud. You can’t “clean the voter rolls” within 90 days of the election date. It’s a federal law.
LOCK. HIM. UP. |
Isn’t it also illegal to vote if you’re a non-citizen? |
Citation? Should non-citizens get to vote in our elections? |
