Here's a tip from an old timer - MCPS closes for inclement weather and they tend to announce later. Granted, I was surprised they didn't send an announcement out at 5 am like they usually do but I guess it's better than being notified at 11 am (which has happened before). When you see there is inclement weather in the forecast, assume there will be a 2 hour delay/no school/early dismissal. Start making plans. You don't need for MCPS to officially call it.

None of the schools in the DC metro area had an early dismissal. Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria City, Falls Church City all had full days. Even Loudoun and Prince William had full days. And everyone made it home safely.

Maryland

Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland closed 2.5 hours early.

Frederick County Public Schools closed three hours early. Offices will remain open as scheduled. Afternoon Pre-K was canceled.

Harford County Public Schools buildings closed three hours early. There will be no Pre-K, Early Intervention or Early Learner regional programs.

“The timing of this storm would have an impact on the dismissal process and consequent bus routes and activities. Our goal with this advance notice is to ensure the safety of our students and staff while also providing families an opportunity to plan ahead for this unexpected change in schedule,” the school system said in a statement.

Howard County Public Schools closed three hours early Tuesday. All aftercare programs, evening activities and community-sponsored programs are canceled.

Calvert County Public Schools closed two hours early and all after-school and evening activities are canceled, the school system said in a post on social media.

My kids' public charter schools in DC proper both had early dismissal. But I think MoCo announced first, so I blame them.

Montgomery County's decision came after Batlimore County, PG, Howard and Frederick. Once the other large districts made the decision, MCPS had to follow suit. If there was a bus accident or a staff member in an incident due to road flooding, high winds, etc, it would have been hell to pay here on these boards. They can't win either way! But know that they've always erred on the side of caution and when dealing with kids, that is the best thing to do in my humble opinion.

Most of the Maryland school districts in the area closed early. If the Virginia school districts in the area didn't close early, so what? Why do you care?

Because a poster above asserted that “it was all over the news today that VA schools were closed.” That’s not correct.

You know, the more I think about it, the closing patterns make sense. MD drivers are far worse than NoVA drivers in any kind of weather- rain, snow, even bright sunlight. So good to get the MD drivers off the road before it got too bad. Hopefully they’ll be ok without to a delay today.

Exactly. Former MCPS parent and moved to Howard. I just came to see how unhinged this thread would get. Didn’t disappoint. So glad I moved out of there. Seriously, Montgomery County parents are the absolute worst. For all its faults, MCPS will never do anything right for these insane people and it actually makes me feel sorry for MCPS.

Recently a Japenese airline plane and coast guard plane collided igniting a plane into flames. No one on the airliner died. Reports have attributed this to vigilant practicing and adherence to safety standards and a procedures after learning from a terribly fatal incident years ago.

MCPS is charged with the safety of 160k+ students, and many on the roadways daily. So if they want to practice extra caution in severe weather I’m not going to begrudge them because it means they have learned from their own previous incidents and those of other districts. Its easy to complain on an anonymous forum about inconvenience, but much harder to be consoled if your kid died in a bus accident. At which point folks would be blaming MCPS for incompetence, neglect, and failure to heed weather warnings.

It’s a no win situation, but if you’re certain you can do better, please take up a post.

This actually runs counter to your point that MCPS always follows the lead of other counties and that if the others make a move, MCPS will follow suit. If we'd followed your logic, we would have ASSUMED MCPS would follow suit with HoCo, only to be surprised they didn't. Which goes back to the earlier point made that the only school district you should be relying on to know if school will or won't be closed is the one your kids actually attend.

Our homeschool co-op had all classes today, until our normal departure at 5:15 p.m. You're right... it's great to be able to read the weather forecast and make a rational decision!

If you have to worry about flooding on the kids’ walk from living room to bedrooms, you and your sister wives should do something about that.

You're really in touch with modern homeschooling... We rent space for the 60 kids who attend, and who either drive themselves or are dropped off. So yeah, we read the weather forecast.
