I'm not married to rankings. What other metrics/criteria would you use to compare a school like Elon with a school like UR? |
NP. It’s a pointless comparison. The majority of UR students come from the northeast, and of course they’re going to be relatively far more wealthy than the majority of in-state Virginians at VCU. I used to work in Richmond alongside several graduates of both schools. They were all capable and smart and nice. VCU kids tend to be a little scrappier and self-reliant, UR kids a little more sheltered and coddled. But everyone has their place. |
This is a fair assessment. Sheltered and coddled isn’t the best impression for the UR boosters to defend. |
| Elon is an a-,hole. |
According to Niche, median 6 year earnings are $44k for VCU, $64k for UR. So obviously some employers hold a more favorable opinion of UR than PP. Those numbers aren't like, Harvard good, but they're good. |
The VCU kids don’t have mommy and daddy to employ them or get them an interview with a friend’s firm. |
Even if that tells the whole story, which anyone with a functioning brain knows it doesn't, you're still acknowledging that UR alums are more successful and thus its alumni network is more lucrative. It's the same reason Bucknell has so much pull on The Street: because so many alums already work there. If you're a current student looking to get your foot in the door, does it really matter how they got there or just that they're there? |
+1! |
The grapes were sour anyway. VCU is a good school, but some of you people are making claims that don't hold up. |
We are talking about the Universoty, not the man. They have no connection. |
The point is a school doesn’t have to be noteworthy and the students don’t have to be intelligent if mommy and daddy get them a job. If you think wealth makes a college superior that’s fine, acknowledge your privilege and move on. But don’t expect others to be impressed and pretend that coddled kids are more intelligent. |
What’s the HHI for the student body at VCU versus UR? I could get my kids entry level jobs within my F 500 at $75k by 8pm tonight. |
The thread started with an unfair comparison (UR, medium smart rich kid school vs Elon, less-smart rich kid school). It didn't even make sense at that point, because no one would seriously entertain both unless they were applying to Elon as a deep safety. Now it's UR vs VCU mud slinging and the comparison makes even less sense. Are UR students coddled? Maybe! Are VCU students scrappier? Probably! Who's smarter? Defining intelligence outright is probably beyond the scope of this thread! We've established that UR students earn more. But what this thread seems to have degenerated into is a pissing match over who is a better person and people are trying to live out their fantasies of moral superiority through it. Touch grass, people! |
Being honest about privilege isn’t a pissing match. Being privileged doesn’t make you a bad person. Acknowledging privilege isn’t a moral superiority exercise. |

What a bad name for the college to have right now.
