I'm surprised this isn't a straight up rejection.

That’s a rude comment made to someone willing to share. GPAs are calculated differently and aren’t everything. I’m sure the student has some great other options too! Good luck with the decision making process!

Sounds like a comment a douchewhoo would make. One from "THE University" as they refer to themselves.

no one actually does this.

It used to happen all the time.

There used to be a car sticker .

I remember my husband saying it was one of the reasons he didn’t want to go to UVA. He went through four years at Episcopal and they called it “THE High School” and he hated it. I’m not knocking UVA. I had a lot of friends who went and loved it (this was the 90s). I also remember JMU = Just Missed UVA too.

Well that settles it! Someone said there “used to be a car sticker”. Lol. My uva grad says no one ever said this during his four years there

NP. While no one says it anymore, it's very true UVA used to refer to itself as "The University." I grew up here and that was a common car sticker. If you didn't live here back in the 80s and 90s, then you wouldn't have seen it.

I grew up in Charlottesville. It was very common.

Well, I live in Charlottesville now and they don’t do it, but by all means continue with the sour grapes on a thread about acceptances for 2026

From-here vs. Come-here throwdown! (Which, incidentally, was kind of the general undercurrent I encountered when I went to UVA.)

For those interested in stats of students selected and not selected go the College Confidential “UVA RD 2022/class of 2026” and Reddit. It’s all there

If tonight is a rejection (and based on the percentage of EA deferred kids who get in, that is by far the most likely outcome at this point), I am going to be annoyed [insert stronger language here]. Kid goes to a large Arlington HS, has a 3.96 GPA/4.53 wGPA, a 35 ACT, is a full IB-diploma candidate, has taken 5 AP classes plus a Dual-Enrollment class, is an Eagle Scout, a varsity athlete, and a super strong club sport athlete as well. Other than applying ED, not sure what else he could have done. Based on the Naviance scatterplots, it should not be a close call (nothing but green below and to the left of his spot), but I suppose we'll see in a few hours.

Best of luck. All of the Eagles with high stats that I know have gotten in

Eagle Scour is common in the top applicant pool, as is “summer job” and “captain of a varsity sport.” Don’t count on it.

Yeah, eagle scout is no longer that big of a deal. It's like any sustained activity.

Not going to argue about how much "better" being an Eagle Scout is than other activities, but it does show sustained, long-term commitment to an activity that provides leadership opportunities and requires demonstrated leadership skills. If that's not helpful anymore, then I'm not sure where the process is any more.

It's just as helpful as many other sustained activities--because sustained activities often move towards leadership. It's helpful, just not uniquely helpful. And the fact is that many boy scout troops are quite small these days--esp. at the older ages-- so the leadership activities are not as telling about a person's capacity for leadership as they may have been when it was a more widely popular activity.

I don't think a couple dozen people posting stats, which may or may not be embellished, is all that informative when thousands were accepted.

Only two to six percent of scouts make Eagle. It is a big deal. Harvard law school sends me a list of new class stats and every year it lists the number of Eagle Scouts in the class. For 2022 it was 11 out of about 400.

It does vary by school. The Scouts did a survey of colleges a couple of years ago and asked how they viewed Eagle Scouts. The answers were pretty wide ranging, from "it's viewed as any other activity" to "very important." I have observed that many selective schools like to say that 100% of their students have had "leadership" roles in HS, and the list that I saw at one school re: what qualifies included things like "President of the Student Body, athletic team Captain, Eagle Scout." So my assumption is that these things are pretty equivalent, and, at a minimum, it checks a box for some of these very competitive schools.

FWIW, my DS is an Eagle Scout and at least one of his acceptance letters this year mentioned that they liked that he was an Eagle Scout, so there's that for an anecdote.

Perhaps they don't now, but it was very common back in the day.

That’s nice. It isn’t distinguishing to get your kid into a top college in 2022.

“Couple dozen people”. Good heavens, you don’t have a clue about CC or Reddit!

Same here. It took the entire pressure out of waiting for the rest of the decisions.

DD and we know she has a good place to go that is within our financial possibilities.
