I'm surprised this isn't a straight up rejection.

That’s a rude comment made to someone willing to share. GPAs are calculated differently and aren’t everything. I’m sure the student has some great other options too! Good luck with the decision making process!

Sounds like a comment a douchewhoo would make. One from "THE University" as they refer to themselves.

no one actually does this.

It used to happen all the time.

There used to be a car sticker .

Well that settles it! Someone said there “used to be a car sticker”. Lol. My uva grad says no one ever said this during his four years there

They also used to sell t-shirt at Mincer’s that said “we’re not snobs, we’re just better than you.”

And they say that JMU stands for "Just Missed the University"

If tonight is a rejection (and based on the percentage of EA deferred kids who get in, that is by far the most likely outcome at this point), I am going to be annoyed [insert stronger language here]. Kid goes to a large Arlington HS, has a 3.96 GPA/4.53 wGPA, a 35 ACT, is a full IB-diploma candidate, has taken 5 AP classes plus a Dual-Enrollment class, is an Eagle Scout, a varsity athlete, and a super strong club sport athlete as well. Other than applying ED, not sure what else he could have done. Based on the Naviance scatterplots, it should not be a close call (nothing but green below and to the left of his spot), but I suppose we'll see in a few hours.

Best of luck. All of the Eagles with high stats that I know have gotten in

Eagle Scour is common in the top applicant pool, as is “summer job” and “captain of a varsity sport.” Don’t count on it.

Yeah, eagle scout is no longer that big of a deal. It's like any sustained activity.

you people are talking about literally ike 30 years ago. NO ONE says these things. The kids that go to UVA are normal people, not arrogant asses. But you go ahead and keep saying that... just makes you look silly.

Highest math?

Yes. But Asian male.

Wow I’m really sorry for your kid PP. To be flat out rejected from UVA and waitlisted at Tech with those stats is completely insane. I’m guessing your kid is interested in engineering and being an Asian male seems to be the worst thing to be for Stem majors. Has he been excepted anywhere else? I hope things work out for him!

The WL at VT is likely an acceptance--VT does this a lot for high stats kids (look at their record).

except for that one year where they took NO ONE off the waitlist! You can't generalize. I know plenty of kids who were well qualified and higher stats that kids who go in who did not get in off the WL last year.

Not going to argue about how much "better" being an Eagle Scout is than other activities, but it does show sustained, long-term commitment to an activity that provides leadership opportunities and requires demonstrated leadership skills. If that's not helpful anymore, then I'm not sure where the process is any more.

Both can be true. The sticker, JMU comment, Snob shirt ARE from the 90s. But many of the students are entitled and arrogant. IYKYK

JMU has an 80% acceptance rate? How are they even remotely the same?

There are 50,000 Eagle Scouts a year, give or take. This does not meaningfully distinguish your DS from a large number of other potential candidates. It's a good EC, but it's not exceptional/unusual. That's not a bash on your kid, just an observation about how "pointy" admissions works.

NP. While no one says it anymore, it's very true UVA used to refer to itself as "The University." I grew up here and that was a common car sticker. If you didn't live here back in the 80s and 90s, then you wouldn't have seen it.

Considering how hard it is to get in nowadays these kids are pretty damn accomplished and smart. And far from entitled.

I remember my husband saying it was one of the reasons he didn’t want to go to UVA. He went through four years at Episcopal and they called it “THE High School” and he hated it. I’m not knocking UVA. I had a lot of friends who went and loved it (this was the 90s). I also remember JMU = Just Missed UVA too.

Only two to six percent of scouts make Eagle. It is a big deal. Harvard law school sends me a list of new class stats and every year it lists the number of Eagle Scouts in the class. For 2022 it was 11 out of about 400.

I grew up in Charlottesville. It was very common.
