Lia Thomas - Will this change college sports for women or a nothingburger?

Yeah, there isn't something 100% right about this. Lia should not be competing.

Having said that...this is just the latest outrage manufactured by the right wing. Look at the Instagram picture posted on the previous page - https://www.instagram.com/p/B63p315lI9U/. Look at the date of the picture - January 3, 2020. Practically 2 years ago.

We heard not one peep of this issue two years ago. And now we are suddenly being bombarded with this outrage about Lia. This is just another attempt by the right wing to drum up outrage over some perceived social issue to distract from the real issues going on.

Why do you still fall for it? Haven't you learned your lesson now?

You’re SOOO right! If there wasn’t outrage immediately when that picture was posted, then clearly there shouldn’t be outrage now. Especially since Lia is smashing the competition. It’s like the statute of limitations has run out.

You are so wise. We should all be more like you.

There’s a stupidity about liberals like you. Your mind is so partisan and tribalistic that when conservatives are raising a legitimate issue that YOU should have raised, you shut down. That’s not a mark of intelligence.

The erasure of women and encroachment by men is something that liberals should be fighting against if we care about women as we claim. What a conservatives raised it five years ago, last century, or just now is irrelevant. This is a real issue and it has to be addressed!

Conservatives wouldn’t be able to campaign on this issue if liberals hadn’t created the issue by tearing down what women have worked for, dummy.

I have read some dumb comments in my life, but this is the dumbest by far. So, if people did not notice a photo posted on an obscure Instagram page last year, then that means that it’s all right for men to rob women of accomplishments in our own sports?

Liberal mom of a college woman swimmer here at another school. The PP is dead wrong in this case. The outrage may be amplified by conservatives, but it is coming from the swimmers, and reporters that cover swimming. The photos may be old, but this is the first year Lia is competing as a female (Penn and the whole Ivy league did not compete last year and she competed as a male in prior years). So now, she's closing in on NCAA records as a female. The outrage is happening now because the competitions are happening now.

Why, thank you. Yes, the world would be a better place if you all were more like me. I'm so glad you realize that.

Are you guys still worried about the caravan of illegal immigrants? What about all the child trafficking going on? Gosh - in 2020 and before, that was all the outrage. The Caravan! The Child Trafficking!

Funny how all that stopped after the election only to be replaced by ALL THESE MEN WILL BE COMING AFTER THE WOMEN IN THEIR SPORTS! THEY ARE ERASING WOMEN!

Something tells me if heaven forbid, Trump were to win in 2024 this issue also would disappear from the CONSTANT INTERNET OUTRAGE and we would just be on our new divisive scare tactic.

Ahhh, misdirection. You backed a bad horse (TG) and now that everyone is realizing that this will DESTROY feminism and everything that my mother worked for and I have worked for, for women EVERYWHERE. Let's talk about somethign else. Let us go off topic and not address the problem.

FU.

This breaks my heart.

I have to young girls who have a passion for swimming. They will probably not be college swimming. But swimming is one of those sports that you work so hard as an individual and it is a long road, to have something like this happen is maddening. More should be done by ALL OF US to stop this, express the outrage and protect our daughters.

I know this will be viewed as anti-trans (I don't view myself as anti-trans) but I think we are in for a reckoning around this issue. Call me a TERF if you want but we have to have a way, culturally and socially and probably legally, to differentiate between women born female and trans women. And there are some areas, like women's sports, where that difference will matter.

I know she is persona non grata and the way she's handled it and many of the things she's said are abhorrent to me, but I think it is illustrative to look at JK Rowling to get a sense of what is going to happen to many people as the issue of trans rights impacts them directly. The thing about Rowling is that her attitude about trans rights is directly tied to her experience of sexism and sexual assault as a woman. I think some of the conclusions she reaches are incorrect, but it's useful to remember that's where it's starting. She has experienced sexism. She has been sexually assaulted by a man. And she views trans rights issues through this lens, and is highly sensitive to anything that might jeopardize what she views as hard-won rights and privileges around those issues.

We will see the same with others. Do you really think female athletes at many levels, who have experienced often tremendous sexism in their sport, are going to look at this situation and say, "Well, trans women are women. No problems at all." No. This will jeopardize their ability to compete, access to scholarships, professional opportunities, etc. And these are women who have ALREADY had to fight hard to get their sports recognized and funded and appreciated in many cases.

In other words, if we don't learn from the people now labeled as TERFs and try to find a way to be both trans-inclusive AND protect the rights of people born female, I think we're going to get to a point where being a TERF is the dominant viewpoint. Which I don't want, as I am not actually anti-trans! But you can't ignore these issues. Trans women are different from women born as women. Full stop. We cannot treat them exactly the same.

Thanks for proving that not only are you not that that bright, you can’t read sarcasm either.

The less morons like you in the world, the better.

I’m pretty sure logic isn’t PP’s strong suit, given her original comment. While your explanation makes sense to those of us with a functioning brain, I’m afraid you’re spitting into the wind with that one.

Lia is going to be the Michael Phelps of USA womens’ swimming, except far better, dominating her competition much more decisively. And any USA sports fan that doesn’t get on board is going to be declared a transphobic bigot. You might lose your job, and you certainly will lose many friends. This is what many of you ordered; eat it.

Anonymous wrote:How tall is Lia? Based on a picture of the women’s UPenn swim team at the beach it looks like well over 6 feet.

The behemoth is at least 6’4. By some accounts, the person is 6’5 and the person’s wingspan is more than a foot greater than that of the women the person beat. Fair, right?

One has to wonder what kind of parents raise such a person so devoid of morals and decency.

If Lia Thomas transition from male to female AFTER male hormones had an effect on the body, then this is no different than a female athlete using steroids to get bigger/stronger (which would be illegal) but it is ok since Lia is trans.

This is MUCH worse than a female athlete on steroids. At birth, men are already different, with larger hearts and lungs, greater bone density, higher hematocrit/hemoglobin, denser musculature. A testosterone-infused puberty makes those differences even more pronounced, but make no mistake: At no point are males and females ever the same or on a level playing field physically.

Boys are allowed to participate in some girl sports up until 10-12 years old then they are banned due to physical differences and concern with safety. How liberals can't see that?

LGBTQ community has hijacked the feminist movement and have actually taken away hard fought gains that women have achieved over many many years! What a shame. And all these "feminist" who are afraid of being canceled don't speak out.

We Feminist are not the ones supporting this travesty happening in female sports. We support females, and transgendered male to fe-male is not what we fought so hard. Why in the world would you think we support men taking over female spaces at the detriment to females.
