Why do you still fall for it? Haven't you learned your lesson now?

You’re SOOO right! If there wasn’t outrage immediately when that picture was posted, then clearly there shouldn’t be outrage now. Especially since Lia is smashing the competition. It’s like the statute of limitations has run out.

You are so wise. We should all be more like you.

Why, thank you. Yes, the world would be a better place if you all were more like me. I'm so glad you realize that.

Are you guys still worried about the caravan of illegal immigrants? What about all the child trafficking going on? Gosh - in 2020 and before, that was all the outrage. The Caravan! The Child Trafficking!

Funny how all that stopped after the election only to be replaced by ALL THESE MEN WILL BE COMING AFTER THE WOMEN IN THEIR SPORTS! THEY ARE ERASING WOMEN!

Something tells me if heaven forbid, Trump were to win in 2024 this issue also would disappear from the CONSTANT INTERNET OUTRAGE and we would just be on our new divisive scare tactic.

Ahhh, misdirection. You backed a bad horse (TG) and now that everyone is realizing that this will DESTROY feminism and everything that my mother worked for and I have worked for, for women EVERYWHERE. Let's talk about somethign else. Let us go off topic and not address the problem.

FU.

This breaks my heart.

So very true! You and your mother have worked so hard for women EVERYWHERE! Gee, I hope your outrage on this issue is strong enough so you don't vote D in future elections. Go vote for Rs instead - they won't support this issue at all! Truly, they won't! I mean, who cares if women lose their access to abortions, democracy is gone, etc. At least there won't be trans infringing on women's sports.

LOL

no, really, this made me LOL! And it sums up perfectly what I've been feeling, but am too fearful to utter out loud.

It’s a chapelle bit. It made a lot of people angry. I thought it was funny and true. The LGBs are basically at equality now

The TQs are going to screw the LGBs. Thanks to this trans bullshit, I have zero sympathy left for the LGBTQs. The TQs are also why the Equality Act is dead and shall remain dead. No one is going to let trans women enshrine their bullshit in federal law under the guise of gay rights.

Whew. I hope you're right. At least we can be assured that it won't get through Robert's court.

Call me a TERF if you want but we have to have a way, culturally and socially and probably legally, to differentiate between women born female and trans women. And there are some areas, like women's sports, where that difference will matter.

I know she is persona non grata and the way she's handled it and many of the things she's said are abhorrent to me, but I think it is illustrative to look at JK Rowling to get a sense of what is going to happen to many people as the issue of trans rights impacts them directly. The thing about Rowling is that her attitude about trans rights is directly tied to her experience of sexism and sexual assault as a woman. I think some of the conclusions she reaches are incorrect, but it's useful to remember that's where it's starting. She has experienced sexism. She has been sexually assaulted by a man. And she views trans rights issues through this lens, and is highly sensitive to anything that might jeopardize what she views as hard-won rights and privileges around those issues.

We will see the same with others. Do you really think female athletes at many levels, who have experienced often tremendous sexism in their sport, are going to look at this situation and say, "Well, trans women are women. No problems at all." No. This will jeopardize their ability to compete, access to scholarships, professional opportunities, etc. And these are women who have ALREADY had to fight hard to get their sports recognized and funded and appreciated in many cases.

In other words, if we don't learn from the people now labeled as TERFs and try to find a way to be both trans-inclusive AND protect the rights of people born female, I think we're going to get to a point where being a TERF is the dominant viewpoint. Which I don't want, as I am not actually anti-trans! But you can't ignore these issues. Trans women are different from women born as women. Full stop. We cannot treat them exactly the same.

I think this is well said.

Also, the word TERF is now used interchangeably online with "older woman." What may have stated as a reasonable classification of some women who were actually transphobic has morphed into a word used as a weapon against older women, and is often used in openly misogynist ways. At this point, people who use the term to insult are outing themselves as misogynists.

Twitter is going crazy about Lia Thomas’ record-setting performance last weekend. Do you think she is a unicorn and we should all just calm down or is it likely that women who were born male fundamentally change college sports and scholarships?

Not fundamentally because stories like this are exceedingly rare. But for the athletes in these particular swimming events, this is a difficult situation.

Exceedingly rare now, but wait 5-10 years. That is OP's whole point.

A "difficult situation?" That's the best you can do?

what do you want? My kid is not the strongest athlete in her sport. She competes hard. there was one transgender kid on the team who was not talented at all regardless of gender...which is typical. most people are not gifted athletes.

I don't think this is a common situation at all. That swimmer was transgender AND a good athlete. That is a rare combination.

The transgender males could have a physical disadvantage in sports competitions when trying to compete against male athletes. That is what it is.

I dont understand what you want? where are these people supposed to compete?

Not everyone gets to compete in high school or college or the Olympics or professionally. That's just the way it is. Transgender MTF women should not be allowed to compete in women's sports. It is not fair to CIS women.

I have read some dumb comments in my life, but this is the dumbest by far. So, if people did not notice a photo posted on an obscure Instagram page last year, then that means that it’s all right for men to rob women of accomplishments in our own sports?

Liberal mom of a college woman swimmer here at another school. The PP is dead wrong in this case. The outrage may be amplified by conservatives, but it is coming from the swimmers, and reporters that cover swimming. The photos may be old, but this is the first year Lia is competing as a female (Penn and the whole Ivy league did not compete last year and she competed as a male in prior years). So now, she's closing in on NCAA records as a female. The outrage is happening now because the competitions are happening now.

I have to young girls who have a passion for swimming. They will probably not be college swimming. But swimming is one of those sports that you work so hard as an individual and it is a long road, to have something like this happen is maddening. More should be done by ALL OF US to stop this, express the outrage and protect our daughters.

To the PP that thinks this is manufactured outrage, but agrees Lia shouldn’t be swimming: can you not agree with conservatives when you think they are right? If not, you are failing to use any critical thinking skills and I implore you to do better. I’ve never voted for a Republican in my life and don’t plan to, but let’s not pretend that mindless tribalism does anyone any good.

Hope you used a VPN. This opinion is sufficient to get you cancelled if its traced to you.

But her opinion is on point. A trans woman is not the same as a biological woman. Why should my rights be squashed for hers?

Lia can swim. Just not against cis women. LIa can swim against guys. Lia can swim against transwomen. It's not fair for LIa to swim against cis women.

Maybe we should have 4 divisions for gender in sports. Cis women, cis men, transwomen, transmen.

Both suck and really don't give a good shit about women's rights. In the right hand you have the Rs with their handmaiden tales bullshit in regards to forcing women to adhere to what Rs believe should be reproduction rights. In the left hand, you have the Ds telling women they must share their space on the tennis courts, competitive swimming lanes, bathrooms, prison cells etc with men who mentally believe they are women. GTFOH. Corruption and dysfunction all around. When it comes to politics, women are screwed coming and going. And we don't receive any of the pleasure in the process.

Agreed. But if your the PP proclaiming we “shouldn’t be falling for” this outrage manufactured by the right, you need to amend your thinking to include space to listen to voices that may challenge your thinking as it appears you have on this issue. But if you see everything as a vast right wing conspiracy (and I know there are plenty of those) that’s a problem too.

It’s me! That poster!

I have no problem listening to other voices. This could have been an interesting conversation even 3 or 5 years ago (yes, there were trans girls competing against cos girls then) or even a few years from now (yes, there will be trans girls competing against cos girls a few years from now)

No conspiracy theorist but this is the outrage du hour! Find all your Facebook “friends” who used to be so concerned abou #SaveTheChildren. See what they are posting about now. There will most likely be an uptick in Trans men competing against women!

So this would be an interesting conversation 5 years ago or 5 years from now, but just not right now?
Yeah, that makes sense.
