Thank goodness for common sense, Zimmerman over Diaz, but that was too close for comfort. Montoya is a dud, but the rest of the Board will find this out as they try to work with her

The role of a Board member is completely different than that of an advocate. And she's never demonstrated any real understanding of the budget or the budget process. She's going to be completely lost when she has to actually make a decision involving balancing equities. You can't fund everything.

I assure you, Laura Stewart is more knowledgeable about the MCPS budget than Montoya or Zimmerman. She knows what needs to be funded, as opposed to the loudest squeaky wheel - talking about you Poolesville, who snuck in for renovations before Wootton, Damascus, or Eastern

You just named the two least qualified Board members MCPS has had in recent times. That's hardly a selling point for Stewart, who has never demonstrated any ability to make decisions.

Yes, and Yang and Rivera-Oven are pretty new and still getting up to speed too. Only Silvestre and Wolff will have been there more than 2 years.

Silvestere and Wolff need to go next.

The problem is that you could end up with someone worse, like Zimmerman. Hopefully voters learn from the disaster of this election.

We don't know how Zimmerman will be. Silvestere is the worst.

No, she's certainly not the worst. And people are going to learn the hard way over the next two years that someone different doesn't mean someone better.

I wonder if Coll will run again- I was really hoping she'd win last time.

Looks like the people have spoken. Evans, two-term incumbent, lost by a shocking 16 points.

How are we feeling about this shakeup?

Great! Good to see people trust the Apple ballot and support our teachers.

Apple Ballot has run BOE for decades.

Voters should have prioritized supporting our students, but obviously a lot of people are happy to vote against their interests.

Yes, the MCEA deceptively conceals the process by which the Apple Ballot is decided, while claiming it's the educators' choice.

So you hope the new board is a disaster, such that people will be discouraged from voting for Apple Ballot candidates next time? Strange priorities. I choose to wish the new members well, regardless of how my votes were cast, and hope that they will succeed.

Considering your reading comprehension level, let's just say I'm glad that no one who was on the BoE when you were educated in MCPS is currently serving.

As a MCPS parent my interests are around retaining my child's fantastic teachers. Without the teachers we have nothing.

MCEA (the teacher's union) is by no means perfect, but they are the institution that advocates for teacher raises each year. While you can certainly argue their efforts haven't been enough, I'm glad they have at least gotten that in contrast to other places where teacher salaries are far worse (and the longer you go without raises the harder it is for the budget to catch up).

And when I have actually read about the candidates without looking at the Apple Ballot, I've often chosen the candidates they chose (but not always). Unfortunately, with few exceptions, the alternatives to the Apple Ballot are horrible IMO and I'm not willing to vote for them.

You prematurely say the new BOE members are a disaster and worse than the current members, and hope voters learn from this. Sounds like you have your mind made up and aren't willing to give them a chance.

Three incumbents losing is not exactly the status quo.
