Montoya, Zimmerman and Stewart all won with comfortable margins.
Looks like the people have spoken. Evans, two-term incumbent, lost by a shocking 16 points. How are we feeling about this shakeup? |
|
I am glad Diaz lost.
I'm kind of surprised Evans lost by more than Diaz did. In a way, I think this is good and I hope it is humbling to the establishment. I think the BOE sucks for structural reasons (huge responsibility, no resources) and this election won't change that. |
| So basically every incumbent who was up for reelection got voted out then (Smondrowski already lost in the primary). Who did the Apple Ballot endorse? |
They endorsed all the winning candidates. Montoya, Zimmerman, and Stewart. They did not endorse any incumbents, which makes sense since the current board rewarded the former Superintendent who promoted her friend and serial sexual harasser, Joel Biedleman, with a massive payout. |
| Before I had children in school, I didn't any pay attention to the BOE races and voted the Apple Ballot assuming that is who the teachers wanted. I didn't realize it was actually the union vote. Has a non-Apple Ballot candidate ever been able to win? |
Yes. In 2022, Valerie Coll was endorsed but Brenda Wolff won. In 2020, they endorsed Sunil Dasgupta but Lynne Harris won. |
| I think it will mean further craziness as the new BOE members will need to get up to speed. We already have a new Superintendent, so this means he just got three new bosses midway thru his first year. |
You can basically call it four. David Stein is still pretty new. |
Yes, and Yang and Rivera-Oven are pretty new and still getting up to speed too. Only Silvestre and Wolff will have been there more than 2 years. |
| Thrilled Evan’s and Harris are gone. Thrilled Diaz lost. Not excited over the new folks but can’t be worse, hopefully. |
He’s not doing anything. |
Silvestere and Wolff need to go next. |
Agree. |
| Stewart won't need to get up to speed - she's been testifying for change before the BOE for decades, and knows the budget inside and out from her days with MCCPTA. Thank goodness for common sense, Zimmerman over Diaz, but that was too close for comfort. Montoya is a dud, but the rest of the Board will find this out as they try to work with her |
| This is the first time since 1990 that voters have elected three new people to the BOE. |
