This school board unanimously approved Monifa despite the teachers, principals telling them it was a bad move. Many of the incumbents on the ballot and members of the BOE approved of the disastrous regime of Jack Smith. You keep making terrible decisions and wrecking MCPS, you're going to be out. The fact that Evans and Harris were surprised they lost shows how far out of touch they really are. Good riddance and keep taking out the trash next election cycle. Got to get that robot Silvestre out.

A unanimous vote in support of McKnight doesn't mean anything but a united front to the public. Not everyone was a McKnight fan, but majority rules.

BOE members need to stop prioritizing that “united front” to the public. We did not ask for nor do we want it. It would have been helpful if BOE members voiced their disapproval or concerns about McKnight and her appointment had been debated and discussed in public.

PP here. I agree with you, but it is a tricky issue in a strong superintendent state. BOE members don't have much real power, except to hire and fire a superintendent. What's left is the soft power of advising.

It's clear to me that throughout McKnight's tenure as super (and even before that), most people who came into contact with her suffered greatly.

If so, that would be a rookie move. Perhaps this school district is too big for him, given his prior professional experience.

Listen to his forums. He regularly says the BOE makes these decisions and it's up to them.

That's a reflexive non-response on his part. But the decisions are his.

Which decisions in particular? Depending on what we're talking about, some are the superintendent's, some are the board's.

The power the BOE has is to direct the Superintendent and when presented with info by CO, to directly question and put dates to when they want followup shared with them AND the public.

You assume that the BOE always gets information from the CO.

No I’m basing that on the fact that they get plenty of presentations from them.

The BOE has the power to demand evidence of the answers and to hold them accountable for lying to them in public. They choose not to because the BOE wants to present a "united front." But they'll tell you in private how frustrated they are by the lies CO tells them.

Yes, and Yang and Rivera-Oven are pretty new and still getting up to speed too. Only Silvestre and Wolff will have been there more than 2 years.

It's time for Brenda to go. I'd be glad to see a primary full of strong candidates.

More likely we'll see something like this year, where the new candidates are worse than the incumbents.

I’m really not sure the new kids can be worse than the incumbents. The incumbents who were pushed out were really from the bottom of the barrel.

And replaced with the actual bottom of the barrel. I think history is likely to repeat itself. I don't see us getting better candidates next time.
