But you'd be smart to listen to the unhappy teachers. They are the ones in the classroom with your kids every day and they don't believe they have a voice in how kids are educated and they don't think the administration treats them fairly. Do you think their expectations are too high also?

My understanding is not so much the curriculum but the pay and benefits. Like other charter schools, pay is lower than DCPS and there is turnover. These teachers can also just leave MV for DCPS or the burbs. They have not and are trying to form a union. Other charter schools are closely monitoring the situation....... If they are successful, they will have set a successful template on achieving this, and I would not be surprised if other teachers at other charter schools follow suit.

This is our 2nd year at P St and we are happy for the most part. Administration is disorganized and isn’t great at communication but it hasn’t had a detrimental impact on our experience. The Unionization effort has created some tension but we appreciate that the teachers are doing what they think is best to make the school better for the years to come.

Welcome to DC school experience. You will find every school, almost, has a lot of loud complainers ours included. They are especially loud on here. You will see, but don’t be scared off by that just yet. Fact is most of the schools have more problems than you’d think given the intense competition to get in. But we are all making it work for the most part.

We're weighing positives versus negatives like any other informed parent, probably every year we re-enroll or choose not to. If you/other long-term parents have this much anger with MV, why did you stay this long? I don't get it.

I think a lot of parents need to work a little harder to figure out if MV is better than their neighborhood public school... Even those middling DCPS schools right near the profit MV campus have stronger academics.

The majority of families interested in MV is because of language immersion, specifically Spanish. I don’t understand why that is not obvious when the whole curriculum is based on it.

But sure, throw out the #1 reason for families interest in the school and tell us the many DCPS elementary schools close to MV’s campus that has >45% of students scoring 4 on PARCC in both ELA and math and >65% students scoring 3 in both ELA and math. Granted PARCC is not the be all and end all but good objective data to start.

I am actually IB for a DCPS dual-language elementary and guess what, I can’t get in for pre-k. I’ve been waitlisted two years in a row. So there are probably some if not “a lot” of parents who are hoping for MV as an option.

Ok. Most families can’t get into MV for preK either. Waitlist data below:

PreK 3 - 327
PreK 4 - 184

I’m not sure what your IB school is but MV is likely probably as competitive.

My point is that it doesn't matter how hard I work to find out if MV is better than my neighborhood school. I have no safe back-up option (that doesn't require a commute at least).

It isn’t an effort. There IS now a union with 90+ teachers in it, that the Administration has chosen not to recognize voluntarily.

The Administration and Board are delaying the inevitable, unless of course they can intimidate or terminate a few dozen of those teachers before an NLRB-mandated election is called.

This statement is just untrue. the affiliated union representative organization (AFT in this case) can claim what it wants to, but until staff have a chance to vote there is no union.

Staff did sign cards. Board won’t voluntarily recognize that Union (Which does claim 80% of the staff are asking), so then in order for the teachers in the union to exercise their rights as a unit, they have to do an official vote under nlrb rules.

AFT isn’t organizing — the teachers at the school are.

Totally possible they haven’t updated. Also possible is a combo of a sibling jumping ahead of you and others declining it would appear that nothing has happened - but in fact there is ‘movement.’

We registered our DS 3rd week of April and within 24 hours we were enrolled and our status updated in my school DC. From this experience, I doubt they are slow or way behind in enrolling kids.
