| Color me shocked. Lack of parenting. Lack of education. Simple. |
I’m thinking like you on crime. However, be careful what you wish for. I’ve watched them all SAYING they want to be tough on crime, but with very little to show for. If Trump wins, he’ll facilitate more crime, and criminals to walk free. Perhaps different types of criminals than under other leadership, however, no less dangerous. Also, “The end of democracy in the United States maybe” is a heavier price than most who have always enjoyed living in a democracy can fathom… so it’s quite shocking how flippantly you and other voters think about it… But I hear you, I’m sick of it, too, of all of it. Democrats need to listen to all their constituents - most don’t want to sacrifice public safety and serious crimes repeatedly going unpunished, and the whole mentality around it. It is way past time for all of them to wake up. |
| Chris Christie had it right when he said Prosecutors need to prosecute, not be social workers. |
THIS! |
Since the 12 year old was shot by the federal marshal the rate has only increased. Generations of kids/parents who did not receive quality parenting that valued education and pro-social values and here we are. Grandparents may have been born during crack epidemic and had unstable, chaotic childhoods, possibly with prenatal drug exposure. The 12 year old above had an IG at 8 with images of cash and guns. His father is in prison for armed robbery in MD. Mom is MIA. A young grandmother was raising him and sibs. Kid was also rapping in the IG, glorifying thug culture. Immigrants often come valuing hard work and education and becoming part of society. For the poor raised here, sometimes the kids are raised by the streets with a very different set of values in music, movies, idols. If benefits were contingent on kids attending school it might incentivize parents/guardians. Right now there are no consequences for anti-social behavior and tragically, way too many of these kids are ending up shot or killed at young ages, or they kill someone else. |
It would help teach consequences and may save lives of kids who are not diverted. Far too many judges act as public defenders in DC Superior Court and even Court of Appeals. The AG and many career prosecutors in USAOs office are not helping these kids, many of whom end up shot or dead at young ages. |
Armed assault, robbery, and the threat of murder, among other crimes, are not to be tolerated, or excused, put under euphemisms like “unauthorized use of vehicle”. If they are treated as the crimes they are, and consistently, they would stop immediately, because these youths are neither “desperate”, nor “trying to survive”. |
Trump did none of those things when in office and the no paper rate continued to climb under his USA. |
DP. What are you implying? That you need to be told that stealing and taking what's not yours, is wrong? Even most 6 year olds know this, innately. |
Yes, such as the difficulty of identifying beyond a doubt. That’s why a multi-pronged approach is likely best, including arresting on the spot - meaning increasing the police force by hundreds+ officers patrolling streets. |
+2 WHY are the expectations so low - that is the critical question - excellent post, PP. |
NP. Mostly agree with you. I think given the stakes of a fascist Republican Party who wants nothing more than to destroy democracy, I think we all must adjust our expectations and realize that things could get a lot lot worse. Unfortunately, I think some crime is a small price to pay for being the sole defender of freedom and democracy around the globe. The Republican alternative of a police state is simply to frightening to contemplate. |
I’m sorry “some crime” is not a small piece to pay. I live here. I own rental property. Everyone is too scared of vocal woke SJW and community groups who show up to protest meaningful criminal justice action at council meetings, or going against the John Legend and Kim Kardashian’s who champion progressive criminal justice reform that keeps people out of jail, but then back on the street to commit more crime. Basically everyone is a fking scaredy cat and doesn’t want to offend anyone and so crime will keep rising. Like somehow it’s become fashionable to favor the criminal over the victim. I’m so tired of my virtue signaling neighbors who see the rims on their Kia’s get stolen or someone attacked and robbed outside the metro near their house, but they still vote for Charles Allen like progressive lemmings. We can’t get safe unless people face the fact that we need to jail people. I’m sorry everyone would rather wallow in their victim complex and be paralyzed by indecision than actually vote for strong action. |
That sounds like Western values. You shouldn't be so close-minded. |

While the car theft rate has climbed in DC, so has it in San Francisco, Miami, Portland, Denver, Milwaukee, and other places.
