Reminder: there were 152 carjackings in 2019.
Skyrocketing to nearly 1,000 is a direct result of post-2020 policies. |

Of note, unfortunately Nadeau and Mendelson are not up next cycle, nor is Frumin. But a successful recall of Allen, a quality candidate to replace him, the addition of Lisa Gore in W 4 and a CM who will act to protect his constituents in W 7 with Gray retiring, + action on the legislation Allen championed would certainly send a message to the rest of the lax DSA endorsed CMs.
I can't help but think if the public and political class took a leaf from Baltimore's current book re: crime that USAO and AG might not fall somewhat in line and trend back toward prosecution rates in the 70s as was typical prior to 2017. Rather than 33% and 50% as is the case now, respectively. |
One of the biggest mistakes by Charles Allen and his hyper-progressive allies on the council was: - raise the age of “juvenile offenders” from 18 to 26 years-old. No one does any time anymore, even if they ‘jack your car at gunpoint. |

We live nearby and unfortunately are thinking about leaving if DC's trajectory continues. This neighborhood (which isn't Petworth, it's Manor Park, just south of Takoma) is wonderful and we've always felt very safe--would be heartbreaking to leave--but the cracks are starting to show. |
The neighbors seem very nice and seem like decent people. |
Absolutely. We could not ask for better neighbors. The good thing is that neighbors are very concerned about incidents like this and want to take action to keep everyone safe, but it's hard with our current leadership. |
Have they/you considered voting out current leadership? The only way at this point is is to support the ranked voting initiative which will allow more candidates to filter up, and then look for a run off that includes moderate candidates of any party (based on their record, experience and platform- takes research)- and support them very actively . If that's too much of a long shot for you and your neighbors and it's easier to keep voting in the most recognizable names and checking off dumb social initiatives (is psyllobin sale coming up again?) Then yes, not much will change and your best bet is to move. |
I mean, of course. I have never voted for any of our current leadership, and never will. Is that too much of a long shot for our neighbors? Great question. We will find out. That's one of the factors in our decision to leave. |
