The Republican alternative of a police state is simply too frightening to contemplate.

So sick of these attempts to normalize crime. I say bring in the Republicans --lifetime Dem.

Thank God, a voice of reason. Doesn't everyone know that nothing can be done? We just have to learn to live with it like COVID. You just can't control nature. Stop trying.

Not Trump and not in Congress. But I would vote Republican for DC mayor and council members, no question.

People get the government they deserve. Weird that everyone talks about Trump as the authoritarian...but folks seem to miss what the FBI is doing to the citizenry, parents that object to the sexualization and battery of their children, and any political opposition.

Learn to defend yourselves folks...cause the government isn't going to help.

Hopefully this trend continues and deters

Pressure needs to be brought on the Council to change this, it is what curbed carjacking in 1993.

This is certainly much stronger rhetoric from Graves, will have to see if there is follow through re: prosecution rates.

I was happy to see this.

Were they released to their parents or kept in jail?

In at least one carjacking story (too many to keep straight), teens were arrested and then the press release said they were released to their parents…

By law, they are entitled to “youthful offender” status, and understandably treated differently when they slip up. Everyone makes mistakes. Youthful offender goes up to age 26 in DC.

Don’t you want to give children a second chance?

Nope. Not when they commit adult crimes.

+ a million

As long as these "youths" know there will be no serious consequences for committing a serious crime, they will continue to offend.
And, what is most frightening about youths committing these crimes is that too many of them have no value for life. They are more apt to shoot/kill their victims because they lack empathy/critical thinking/reasoning.

just stop with the idiotic lies. the FBI is not doing anything to "parents that object to the sexualization and battery of their children". people can express all the opinions they want. but people, including parents, cannot harass teachers and school administrators and threaten them and their families with violence and death because of the latest lie they read on Facebook. that's it.

i find it ridiculous that the limit is 25. i can understand that a 15 yr mandatory sentence for a 14 yr old may not be the best idea ( i am livid at the current crime rate but i can still see that a 14 yr old should get serious help instead of prison in many cases). but a 24 yr old who goes around carjacking old ladies with a gun to their head?? above 16 judge should be able to consider adult charges if the situation warrants them

I tried to make this point upthread and someone said "science says their brains are still growing." I couldn't tell whether they were satirizing the left or being serious, but let's just let their brains grow safely in jail rather than out here where the brain growth is leading them to attack our communities.

Pressure needs to be put on the Council to change the law back.

Not effectively deterring criminal behavior not only endangers the public, many of the kids are ending up shot or dead at young ages. The rhetoric does the kids themselves no favors.

There need to be consequences for parents of kids who are out committing violent crimes repeatedly, are truant repeatedly, etc. If the parents can't control them, then they need to be reported to Court for services. Are parents profiting from their kids robberies and dealing?

Nope. Carjackings are a form of terrorism.
