People have seriously lost their minds. I am truly hoping the posts about "giving everyone under 18 a car" and the BS about brains not being wholly formed until 26 and that these thugs are "kids" are sarcastic. How about this? In addition to trying them as adults and throwing them in jail for a long time, how about we round up their absentee parents and throw them in jail too?
For the people standing in the back, such as yourself, multi-generational trauma caused by the United States gov't, atrocities, war crimes committed by the govt against the African American community has contributed to this factor. The government has failed to apologize for its atrocities, nor has it paid reparations to African Americans. This issue is systemic and is what happens when the govt stole a people from their land, enslaved them for 400 years, had Jim Crow, periods of lynching, mass incarceration, no civil rights and voting before 1965, science experiments on poor African Americans, under-resourced schools, etc. Shall I continue? The stealing of cars is the least of DC's problems.
So taking guns out and threatening to murder people for their car is ok? Because of slavery, which ended more than 160 years ago. Not sure if you're aware, but we've had a black president since. Tell me, how many more years of black violence is acceptable because of historical reasons?
Armed assault, robbery, and the threat of murder, among other crimes, are not to be tolerated, or excused, put under euphemisms like “unauthorized use of vehicle”. If they are treated as the crimes they are, and consistently, they would stop immediately, because these youths are neither “desperate”, nor “trying to survive”.
