Based on the information provided, it looks like student didn't have as strong an academic record as classmates did. Rigor and coverage were missing. It's not a conspiracy against the Whites. This will teach the kid grit. Parent needs to learn to accept adversity and model resilient behavior rather than whining like a toddler and shouting about Whites being persecuted. my two cents . . .

Why would a top student not find good safety and match schools so they are not "relegated to a school they have no interest in"? There are thousands of Top Students and not enough spaces at the "top/elite/instate" schools. So this parent has smartly figured out that VCCS is an affordable way to stay instate and get into the great affordable option if that's where you want to attend. More kids should do this.

It's not about being White or any other background. It's about there are more qualified students than spaces. And colleges want diversity on all levels---that may mean someone only has a 1450 and 3.7 and gets in over your 4.7/1550 student. It's not like VATech is admitting kids with 1000/3.0 into engineering over your kid. The differences between 1450/1550 is minimal.

It has a great deal with being white, and being an in state applicant and being a student from a large and competitive school. There is a huge difference when there is a 4.7 student not getting accepted and a 3.7 that is struggling. A 4.7 and 3.7 aren't even close.

VCCS is great because the 4.7 student can get in despite an admissions system that had been corrupted to the elite left.

Safety school are usually where people don't want to go.

How can you expect everyone to adopt your vile, racist point of view if you don't provide the unweighted GPA and the list of courses and the "core coverage" evidence? And is this a magnet school? There's nothing in what you've said so far, even with that convenient jump in reported WGPA, that would make this candidate a sure bet for UVA engineering, especially if the student is from a STEM magnet school. College admissions isn't that complex. You need to let in the most qualified students in. That's it. Anything else is social justice warriors penalizing groups based on demographics.

Look at his stats. He is outstanding by every measure and well above average at VT and UVa engineering. If you really think that every single admitted student is better than him, you are wrong. He has a 4.0 at VCCS and will be there next fall. I just want to point out VCCS to parents with students that have below a 4.7 GPA. I put down the wrong GPA in my first post. He had a 4.7.

Because the T20 schools could easily do that each and every year and still turn students away.

But the fact is colleges want a "diverse" student population because that's what works best. I want my kid to attend college with kids who are not carbon copies of them. The real world isn't like that and college shouldn't be either.

FYI---someone having a 1500 and 3.75 gpa is not really any less smart than your 1600/4.0 student. However, they might be a bit less arrogant and less entitled

My son was among the most qualified and not accepted, so he found a way in via VCCS. My son worked very hard for his 4.7/1550, top 5%, Eagle Scout, 3 sports and violin, etc, etc. He did not have a sense of entitlement, but he absolutely should have been accepted into a state school. I am pointing out to parents that VCCS is a very good option for a lot of people, especially with a college admissions system as broken as Virginia's.

You can call him an arrogant teenager next year when he is a student at Tech.

To add, your situation happens more than most people (parents) realize. It is only a matter of time before people get fed up, organize, start publicizing what is happening, and do something about it.

Nooo way we would go to the NYT. He is very content to be working his way to be an engineer. If anything, he learned a bit about adversity not getting treated fairly. The world isn't fair.

I did however sign up to be a member of SFFA. They take colleges to court. I don't think the NYT or WaPo would be interested either. It doesn't fit their social agenda.

You are kidding, right? Rigor? He took every AP class he could and got As. 12 of them. AP Spanish V, AP English, AP European History, AP US History, AP Physics C, AP Calc BC and more How could he have been better? He was basically a college sophomore when he showed up for college this past summer. 4.7 GPA, 1550, Eagle Scout, 3 sport athlete, basketball team captain, volunteer, orchestra, engineering intern. He is outstanding in every way.

Maybe if we had spent $20k on a "elite" college prep councilor he would have gotten in, but we did not. He is doing well at VCCS and he will end up as an engineer. He has learned a great deal about adversity and how life is not fair. I hope parents look into VCCS, because it is a great deal. And college admissions offices are broken.

He got As in every single class he took with the exception of an A- in Spanish 2 in 8th grade and an A- in one math class in 11th grade. I forget which class. He got As in AP Spanish V, AP English, AP European History, AP US History, AP Physics C, AP Calc BC. 4s and 5s on every AP exam with the exception of Calc (got a 3) partly because he took the AP exam 5 months after completing the class because of "split semesters" during covid.

He wanted to go to MIT, UVa or Tech. Applied and got rejected from MIT, waitlisted to VT and UVa. He applied to an in state Va school as a safety. Once the waitlist was exhausted, he decided he still wanted to go to VT. GAA is a way to get into the school you want to. He is doing it now and will be at VT next fall.
