UVA admission stats across NOVA

A few years ago, I was told by a UVA Admissions person that for a non-magnet public high school, they focused on students in the top 10-12% of the graduating class. For a magnet high school, they focused on the top 1/3rd of the class. This person said that this approach meant that it would be better to be at the top of their ordinary geographic high school than n the bottom 2/3rds at a magnet.

Nah. My kid hit that pretty easily, without being some overstressed, study at midnight, brilliant academic rockstar.

10: World History and Human Geo
11: APUSH, European, English Lang, Latin
12: Macro, Micro, English Lit, US Gov, Comp Gov

That’s 11. Clearly a humanities kid. Not doing anything special at her HS— in fact, stood out in her class for avoiding AP STEM classes (took non-AP Calc) and piling on the humanities. The key for her was going for literally every AP in her area of interest and not struggling for a year (maybe with tutoring) to pull out a kinda okay grade in math or science.

34 ACT, which hits Langley’s media

Attending WM. Did not apply to UVA.

WM is much, much easier to get into.

Not much, much easier. My friend's daughter got into UVA but not W&M.

+1

This happens often, but we usually only hear from the other side, so people tend to think that UVA is a better school - in most cases, UVA is not a better school than WM.

Delusional. W&M is inferior to UVA, everyone knows this

A boring debate. Apples Oranges. Both are fantastic schools. Some apply to both, some don't. Some are accepted by both, some not. Why must we snark

This is something I just don't understand.. why the contentiousness? Why the constant bashing of which school is better?

My kid planned only to apply to these 2 schools.
Got in ED in one of them, but would have been fine attending the other.
The ED one was a better fit personality-wise, and the other one would have taken more time to fit into but as DC said, either would have been just fine.

Are you sure it was UVA admissions or someone else?

This true for all competitive colleges. Better to be at the top of your class in a terrible school than middle of the pack at a great school.

Any news on when UVA will announce EA admission results?

This worked for us. Our DC is a senior at a lower ranked Nova high school- think large % of FARMs and URM students. So far nine UVA admits via ED. Only one URM that I can think of; none are FARMs students either. Are these kids stellar students? I would say so. Did some have issues getting the AP classes they wanted to take? Yep, lower demand for those classes, meant only few sections offered. Do they all have 4.5 + GPAs and 1500+ SAT scores? Nope, but they worked hard and also excelled in other areas. Jobs, athletics, volunteering. Do their teachers know them well? I would think so, being the few students that stand out academically. Probably wrote stellar LORs.

I still cannot understand the obsesion some parents have about keeping certain higher ranked high school boundaries the way they are to keep the FARMs kids out. They continue to feel their kids get “cheated” out of UVA. Did my kid see a fight at their school? Yep. Is there vaping in the bathrooms? Yep! Is there bad language in the hallways? Yep. Will they be just fine? Yep!

Admissions says early February; last year it was the 6th or 7th I think. Dean J said in a recent Q&A that they would give 24-48 hours notice. My kids thinks this Friday.

Does anyone know if FCPS high schools report grade distributions? I've tried searching for them but no luck.

We’re hopeful, but I think it will be close to 2/15. Dean J said there were 55k applications, highest number ever, and they need all the time they can get.

That’s total, up from 51K last year. If it’s 2/15 I think UVA would explicitly state that that won’t announce till mid-February as opposed to early February. Lots of schools are seeing big increases and it’s not delaying notification significantly.

True. Happy in the Lewis pyramid.

I thought so too. My DC tells me about kids taking that many APs at her Montgomery County competitive school. Many are so stressed and in therapy. Seems unhealthy l
