It's not a conspiracy against the Whites. This will teach the kid grit. Parent needs to learn to accept adversity and model resilient behavior rather than whining like a toddler and shouting about Whites being persecuted. my two cents . . .

You are kidding, right? Rigor? He took every AP class he could and got As. 12 of them. AP Spanish V, AP English, AP European History, AP US History, AP Physics C, AP Calc BC and more How could he have been better? He was basically a college sophomore when he showed up for college this past summer. 4.7 GPA, 1550, Eagle Scout, 3 sport athlete, basketball team captain, volunteer, orchestra, engineering intern. He is outstanding in every way.

Maybe if we had spent $20k on a "elite" college prep councilor he would have gotten in, but we did not. He is doing well at VCCS and he will end up as an engineer. He has learned a great deal about adversity and how life is not fair. I hope parents look into VCCS, because it is a great deal. And college admissions offices are broken.

why didn't he go to another four year college? with those stats he could have his pick.

Because we told him that we would only consider paying for an in state public school. He chose 3 schools and an out of state private "elite" that we would have maybe paid for, but he did not get in. Once he only got into his safety school, he realized that he really didn't want to go there. He decided he wanted to go to VT and discovered GAA.

GAA has worked out wonderfully. He got grants and scholarships to pay for all 3 semesters in the VCCS (summer 2022, fall 2022, spring 2023) and is also working part time at an engineering firm while living at home. I hope parents with students hoping to get into a Va state school and get hosed by the admissions process look at GAA. You need a 3.4 at VCCS and have to complete the GAA syllabus to get into your choice of school. All state schools accept GAA students.

No it doesn't upset me at all and I genuinely wish him all the best. College admissions is complex, which I'm sure you know, so your sour grapes seem misplaced. Do you have data on the to support the statement you made about out of state students?

College admissions isn't that complex. You need to let in the most qualified students in. That's it. Anything else is social justice warriors penalizing groups based on demographics.

Look at his stats. He is outstanding by every measure and well above average at VT and UVa engineering. If you really think that every single admitted student is better than him, you are wrong. He has a 4.0 at VCCS and will be there next fall. I just want to point out VCCS to parents with students that have below a 4.7 GPA. I put down the wrong GPA in my first post. He had a 4.7.

No, who wants to attend a college where the students all have 1580+ and 3.95+ UW gpa?
Because the T20 schools could easily do that each and every year and still turn students away.

But the fact is colleges want a "diverse" student population because that's what works best. I want my kid to attend college with kids who are not carbon copies of them. The real world isn't like that and college shouldn't be either.

FYI---someone having a 1500 and 3.75 gpa is not really any less smart than your 1600/4.0 student. However, they might be a bit less arrogant and less entitled

Carbon copies, like smart and qualified? The world is full of smart and qualified engineers.

My son was among the most qualified and not accepted, so he found a way in via VCCS. My son worked very hard for his 4.7/1550, top 5%, Eagle Scout, 3 sports and violin, etc, etc. He did not have a sense of entitlement, but he absolutely should have been accepted into a state school. I am pointing out to parents that VCCS is a very good option for a lot of people, especially with a college admissions system as broken as Virginia's.

You can call him an arrogant teenager next year when he is a student at Tech.

F the admissions people.

I would take your story to the NYT, if I were you. Such a great story, truly. Your son will do wonderful things in this world.

I agree with that, but when a white, in-state kid with a 4.7 GPA (I incorrectly wrote 4.4 in my original post) doesn't get into the school he wants to go to, it is a great option. Same for people with economic factors. My son has been awarded scholarships and grants for his entire 3 semesters (summer 2022, fall 2022, spring 2023) and will show up to VT without having spent a dime on tuition. He also has been working part time. There is a good chance will spend 3 years there as he is planning on double majoring. 3 years of college is pretty good.

VCCS will bypass the broken college admissions office. That is the best part.

Why should a top student be relegated to a school they have no interest in? Because they are white?

Why would a top student not find good safety and match schools so they are not "relegated to a school they have no interest in"? There are thousands of Top Students and not enough spaces at the "top/elite/instate" schools. So this parent has smartly figured out that VCCS is an affordable way to stay instate and get into the great affordable option if that's where you want to attend. More kids should do this.

It's not about being White or any other background. It's about there are more qualified students than spaces. And colleges want diversity on all levels---that may mean someone only has a 1450 and 3.7 and gets in over your 4.7/1550 student. It's not like VATech is admitting kids with 1000/3.0 into engineering over your kid. The differences between 1450/1550 is minimal.

It has a great deal with being white, and being an in state applicant and being a student from a large and competitive school. There is a huge difference when there is a 4.7 student not getting accepted and a 3.7 that is struggling. A 4.7 and 3.7 aren't even close.

VCCS is great because the 4.7 student can get in despite an admissions system that had been corrupted to the elite left.

Safety school are usually where people don't want to go.

How can you expect everyone to adopt your vile, racist point of view if you don't provide the unweighted GPA and the list of courses and the "core coverage" evidence? And is this a magnet school? There's nothing in what you've said so far, even with that convenient jump in reported WGPA, that would make this candidate a sure bet for UVA engineering, especially if the student is from a STEM magnet school. Angry parents constantly use boards like this to chest-thump and hair-tear in performative white fragility meltdowns, but we need more stats and info to join you in really feeling the full arc of your twenty-comment hatefest.

Haha. I guess you are one of the wokes that everyone that disagrees with affirmative action ( most people in the US) is racist.

I'm not going to post his transcript, but he was at a math and science academy and took the most difficult classes possible. I am not chest thumping,.just letting parents know about VCCS because college admissions offices are run by people like you.

In all subjects or in just math and science?

We know that rigor across the core is important at UVA. With 50,000 applications, they can pick from many excellent students, so every bit of the application matters, too.

He got As in every single class he took with the exception of an A- in Spanish 2 in 8th grade and an A- in one math class in 11th grade. I forget which class. He got As in AP Spanish V, AP English, AP European History, AP US History, AP Physics C, AP Calc BC. 4s and 5s on every AP exam with the exception of Calc (got a 3) partly because he took the AP exam 5 months after completing the class because of "split semesters" during covid.

Well, there was something amiss and you don't want to admit it or just aren't aware of it because it was in a part of the application you didn't see. It looks like all three schools agreed that they didn't want to accept the application, so your beef shouldn't be with UVA.

Anonymous wrote:May I ask why he didn't want to go to his safety school? My understanding is that for engineering it doesn't make too much of a difference as to which school you go to as long as it is ABET accredited. Was it cost or prestige or something else? My HS sophomore wants to go into engineering, and at this point, I'm feeling indifferent about whether he goes to NC State, Delaware, VT, etc. as long as it has his concentration and we an afford it.

He wanted to go to the best engineering school he could and we can only afford in state schools. And he wanted to go to an in state school with friends. If affordability is any concern, GAA is perhaps the best deal going. As I said, my son got his tuition paid for the entire time at VCCS, including books. I think paying an out of state tuition for a state school if ridiculous if you live in Virginia. I've been a taxpayer here for 20 years funding the tuitions of the people in the administration building.

Prestige definitely has something to do with it. He wanted to go to an "engineering" school. We think VT fits.

My son had a 4.4 GPA, 1550 SAT, is an Eagle Scout, 3 sport athlete, basketball team captain, played the violin in the orchestra, 12 AP classes for 62 college credits, top 5 percent of his class... He was not accepted to VT or UVa engineering. He applied to a safety school, but decided he didn't want to go there and wanted to go to VT. VCCS has GAA, Guaranteed Admissions Agreement with all state schools. He showed up to VCCS as a sophomore (because of AP credits) and will qualify in 1 year to go to UVa and VT. He will show up to one of them next fall as a junior. F the admissions office. They are all run by social justice warriors and are letting people in for the wrong reasons. GAA takes the woke admissions office out of the loop.

Agree with most of your points, but did your son apply ED at VT or UVA? If he had, he wouldn't have been rejected.

He applied early action. He wasn't sure where he wanted to go. Lesson learned. There were kids at his high school what got in early action that had a less stellar record. Very good and they should have gotten in, but not as good as him. My next kid will be applying early action. Or maybe she will want to go to VCCS.
