SAHM's, What do you do all day?

Why do you care?? You don't even know me.

I'm a SAHM and am loving it. It's a great time of life with the kids, and I'm glad I've slowed down to enjoy it. Part of the reason I felt confident leaving the workplace completely is that I worked very hard to build a strong professional reputation, and that I have academic credentials that are helpful. Just to say that it's not always women without career success that become SAHMs. Many of us leave the workforce because we have been highly successful, and know that we will be given that opportunity again when it suits us.

Both my kids are in school til 3:00. After I drop them off at 8am if run a few errands. Almost every day I need to go to grocery store, bank, post office, etc. Then I hit the gym or yoga from 9-11 ish. I have the best body I've had in my life and I deserve this time. Worked like a dog in my twenties and thirties! After that I head home and clean the house, start dinner, do laundry, walk dog. Pick kids up at 3:00 And head to activities/ soccer, lacrosse , etc. Dinner at home, homework then bed.
I'll probably go back to work Part- time at some point. But I am a happy, calm Mom with this easy schedule. My husband sure appreciates that and my kids, too.

Some don't have children, or some have grown children, and some have school age children. My neighbor is the worst --- she literally shudders when she sees my daughter and says "oh, I just couldn't IMAGINE putting my Susie in daycare". And yet.....Susie at age 4 spent 2-3 hours a day watching Scooby Doo movies. And then the 13 year old from next door would come over after school to "play" so my neighbor could "have some time to herself" and run errands.

So I don't get it. My child goes to school from 8-3 and spends from 3-5 in day care, but somehow, I'm a worse parent than one that plops her kid in front of the TV for several hours, and "farms out" the care to a 13 year old?

Yep, that 10 hours of day care a week is going to turn my kid into an ax murderer for sure, and the beloved little darling next door, who can't get along with any of the other neighborhood kids, is going to be a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

I'm a SAHM, and I agree with you. Frequently, when we go over to other SAHM's houses during the day, the television is on. I would like to say I try not to judge, but the truth is I think to myself, "Your child would be better off in a daycare center." Oh, I judge when I walk into the house of a 9-month-old and her mother says, "Sophie is just watching her Baby Einstein." Then again, I have other friends whose home daycare providers do the same thing-- keep a TV on all day.

That said, if I'm lucky enough to get a nap from my daughter, I spend about 2 hours a day just sitting and reading a book, which is lovely to do in the middle of the day. When I was working, I definitely had more than 2 hours of free time a day when work was slow, but I spent it on the Internet. If I were still working I would get to read through every page of this lovely discussion, but I stay off the internet once my kid is awake.

Some people don't want intellectual stimulation. That sounds harsh, but it's totally true -- I have friends who SAH and haven't read a book in years, but are in the gym every day for hours. They look amazing.

I personally would go nuts from the lack of stimulating conversation and the focus on physicality, but that's just because I'm a nerdy person who loves talking about anything and everything (with adults). I work out an hour a day, and it's like pulling teeth for me, because it's so boring (even with something interesting to listen to/watch while I'm working out).

It takes all kinds to make the world turn. Just like some enjoy being SAHM and some love WOH, there's no right or wrong way to live your life if it's making you happy.

But, now that it's the end of the week, I'm wondering what would I be doing if this was my way of life? I feel like I'd run out of money & things to do.

Just curious....

What do you care?Writing a book or something?Poor you don't know how to manage money or find things to do.If more people would mind their own business I'm sure their marriage, money problems would be over.Instead unhappy people see happy people and want to cause trouble.I assume your one of them.

I sit around and wonder about WOHMs who don't know the difference between plural and possessive.

I sit and ponder the demise of the space bar.

I struggle to understand how people could have graduated from middle school without knowing the difference between your and you're and yet still be here claiming to have superior lives.

Definately agree.

I do everything that needs to be done that you pay someone else minimum wage to do. And I love it.
