I suspect you are correct though maybe he wasn’t a savvy hiker or had a health condition.

I honestly know middle class families where this is a "thing". One or two nights. Not entirely implausible.

It's actually a gorgeous campground that books up a year in advance, so I don't know how the Laundries just popped in for a night.
