What a smarmy scumbag. I hope MD doesn't fall for his "deals," VA continues to reject, and Ted has to go groveling back to DC - and the only offer a fraction of what they were offering before. |
All the historical or historically-themed attractions compete with eachother. Some have symbiotic relationships like Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg (both historical simulacra that appeal to different age groups with some overlap). But they are also rivals competing for money and attention: a new flagship Lululemon on historic Duke of Gloucester Street (where the bookstore used to be) VS the new DarKoaster (the first indoor straddle coaster in N America) set in Germany within cursed castle grounds of King Ludwig. |
Narrator: He will grovel back to DC. MD isn't interested. |
His pride will prevent him from doing ever considering D.C. again. It’s the Nationals Landing or Harbour or bust. But there’s a dark horse in this race: Maybe he’ll move the teams back to Baltimore. (Baltimoreans would love their Baltimore Bullets back. They kind-of got the Colts back with the Ravens, but they’ve been w/o their beloved Bullets all these years. The Caps though were always a D.C. franchise.) The Baltimore Harbour has all these snazzzy redevelopment plans designed by European star architects. I can imagine the new Baltimore Arena becoming the linchpin for a revived Lexington Market / Charles Center neighborhood. |
Baltimore doesn't seem like a likely destination for these teams for the same reason that Ted wanted to have a brand-new free arena built for him by Virginia: Money. Surely it's more lucrative to operate NBA and NHL franchises + a downtown arena in D.C. than it is in Baltimore. (The most lucrative option of all, of course, is to have the taxpayers anywhere pay for it, but still.) |
| He’s going to want the same public finance deal in Maryland that he’s trying to get in Virginia with the full faith and credit of the state backed bonds. I don’t see Moore or a democratically controlled GA agreeing to this either. |
Unless the new arena deal speeds up planning and construction of the new line (between downtown and Towson) for the floundering Baltimore Subway. This planned subway line is the city’s critical Link for an equitable and useful rapid transit system. So if the city pushes hard enough for a new arena, the GA just might go along with it. |
The city might. The question is do the NBA and do the NHL both want to sign off on abandoning the 8th largest media market in the county in favor of the 28th. They'd also be abandoning some of the wealthiest counties in favor of Baltimore with little chance that they'd get much regional traction thanks to the Flyers and 76ers |
Good luck, Maryland. - a virginian |
The Baltimore subway is floundering because Hogan gutted it. |
|
Neither league would approve a move from DC to Baltimore. Not going to happen.
Ted will get his $500M for CaptialOne, DC will up security and other investment in the area and perhaps strike some incentives for Ted to get in on some of the RFK land for other parts of his dream. |
Not a chance that they will risk the commies choosing National Harbor because they've promised development rights at RFK to Ted |
Just like most VA taxpayers, MD taxpayers don't want to finance billionaires any more either. He can finance it himself. |
| I wonder if these politicians have considered the impact of a move to National Landing on the future championship victory parades. Would the victory parade be down King Street? That would make sense. Market Square could host the pre-parade rally with the Alexandria mayor and councilors. |
Not really an issue for the Wizards and the Caps. But dream on. |
