The arena deal is the same way. It's impossible to know what forces will shape the future. In the early 90s we didn't understand the impact of technology or the internet on the DMV area. And there will be something else in the future that we don't know today.

I don't like the deal but at the end of the day it's likely to happen. Leonsis, Monumental and their foundation will agree to make a substantial "investment" in the state senator's district, including contributions to favored "community organizations" and contracts with identified "consultants." And don't forget the sports facilities for kids programs. All for the state senator to steer a large piece of the pie.

Yup. Eminent domain. Give the hotel-casino a Chinese theme to cash in on the neighborhood cultural vibe. It could be DC’s own mini Macau with gambling and resorts all centered around a spectacular hotel and arena. To design the complex, Ted can hire European architect Bjarke Ingles, the favored architect among sports team owners these days, e.g. the upcoming Athletics ballpark (that looks like the Sydney Opera House) for Las Vegas.

I do not see the DC Govt helping either VA based team organize a parade in DC in the unlikely event that either wins another championship. What would DC get out of a mere parade?

I do not see the DC Govt helping either VA based team organize a parade in DC in the unlikely event that either wins another championship. What would DC get out of a mere parade?

Exactly. If the Commanders win a super bowl then I expect the victory parade to be along Rt 1 with the pep rally in front of the County Government buildings in Hyattsville. The Md Governor, future Senator Hogan, the PG council, Magic Johnson, etc will all make their speeches from there. Upper Marlboro is just too far away.

The Caps won a Stanley Cup just six years ago! Not saying it's likely to happen again, but (as someone who grew up a Caps fan) I also wouldn't have thought it was every likely to happen in the first place.
