Which summer swim clubs are opening (nova)

And of course, zero mention of playgrounds .... just waiting for places like Badlands and Scramble and SkyZone to say that they’re some combination of non-essential retail and indoor gyms so my kids can pick up indoor cooties at one of those places while county and state park playgrounds remain closed indefinitely. (BTW, Maryland opened state park playgrounds before phase 1!)

It would be good to know the legal landscape here.

Virginia Dept of Health is making their own rules. Pools in other states are not as restrictive. Given such an overwhelming crisis one group of people should not be so powerful.

So arbitrary. The rules for athletic activities allow for contact between family members and incidental contact between non-family members. A family should be able to use a cordoned off section of an outdoor pool.

Did somebody on the governor’s team have a bad experience at a pool as a kid?

No, the governor just wants complete control of Virginia while he floats in his personal
Pool and we watch our family and friends in other states return to sports, friends, pools, etc

Anyway, our pool is doing phase 1 now and based on our membership and the deck space we have and the creativity of our board president, I don’t see how we can’t work around this and make it work while following these guidelines. He said groups of 50 so why can’t that be done on a pool deck? He even said chairs can be used.

I don’t see where it requires a pool deck to reduce capacity, but to play nice we could do 50.

True. Didn’t see that for pools. Just going off his groups of 50 rule.

Forget that. We can be pretty sure of his decisions for schools.

We are doing Phase 1 too and are being a bit broad in our definition of a “lap lane” and “laps”. Still, it is all with common sense.

Yes we just have to keep moving so floating on a pool noodle is allowed.

our pool announced you can lap swim 5x a week for 1 hr, but the kicker is that it is only available for those 18+ which is ridiculous and would mean half the lifeguards aren't even allowed to lap swim.

yes- that is sillly. I suspect that they will have lots of empty slots and will open it up to more ages.

For members of pools that have already opened but are only allowing adults to lap swim.... what has demand been like so far? If there are lots of empty slots, are your pools planning to modify these rules to allow under-18 lap swimmers?

Demand is there. Most fill up. I think we end up with about 4 vacant slots each day. We allow swimmers age 7+.

our pool has 11 lanes for lap swimming. They opened sign up yesterday and there are a lot of empty slots, even on the weekends. Limited to 18+ which cuts out at least 50% of the pool members.

Today we had 30 of 49 slots used. That’s our lowest number since last Friday. Tomorrow 47 of 49 are taken. 34 of 49 are taken for Thursday.

I wish unused lap lanes would be open to the general members to be able to get extra time in. Having them empty with no option for members who want to use, get them, makes no sense.

You mean use them for other than lap swim? We aren’t real strict on “lap swim” but that’s mostly what is done. We allow walking for example. The thing is you can only have one per lane and nobody on deck.

All swimming is exercise.

agree- but recognize this is the Governor's rule, not the pool's rule. Our pool is open- it's basically empty, very few people are signing up to swim (it's set at 13+ for lap swimming).

I meant for our pool. Regardless, the governor's rule allows 10 or less on deck. For pools with 6 lanes, that's 6 swimmers max. It seems dumb that almost every session of swimming, there are empty lanes when you have members who would love those spots. Why not release the spots to anyone the last 90-120 minutes before the hour is to begin? This way, it is more likely that they will be filled rather than empty. (And don't count those last minute sign ups against the members' max allowed.)

Members pay for the pool to Wade and have fun not stupid laps. Shut it all down till next year.

19:23 here. Notice our laps are being utilized and you can sign up any time up to the start of that block.

oh- you have members who want to lap swim, but they are not allowed? We are allowing anyone to take any open slot- no matter how many times they have swum- for day of swimming. You are only allowed 2 advance sign ups- but unlimited day of sign ups.

If we can't use the full facilities then refund us the year, shutdown the pools if needed. I ain't paying full price for a 1/2 eaten chicken wing. Don't shit in my mouth and call it Sunday dinner.
