our pool announced you can lap swim 5x a week for 1 hr, but the kicker is that it is only available for those 18+ which is ridiculous and would mean half the lifeguards aren't even allowed to lap swim.

yes- that is sillly. I suspect that they will have lots of empty slots and will open it up to more ages.

For members of pools that have already opened but are only allowing adults to lap swim.... what has demand been like so far? If there are lots of empty slots, are your pools planning to modify these rules to allow under-18 lap swimmers?

Demand is there. Most fill up. I think we end up with about 4 vacant slots each day. We allow swimmers age 7+.

our pool has 11 lanes for lap swimming. They opened sign up yesterday and there are a lot of empty slots, even on the weekends. Limited to 18+ which cuts out at least 50% of the pool members.

With this under-utilization of capacity, is your pool planning to adjust policies before Phase 2 and start allowing under-18 swimmers?

I don't get why pools are setting these adult-only policies when many of their best swimmers are the youth on their NVSL teams.

18 seems quite high when others are low, even as low as second or third grade age.

Agree. Cleaning chairs and tables between people is stupid. Just have people bring their own chairs, limit the number of people and open the dang pools.

I think having people bring their own chairs may be something we do at our club. I guess the good thing is we have probably a good week and a half to plan and prepare to a move into Phase 2.

Agree. Also, someone said no kids under 7 which is a bummer for my almost 7 year old who could use the energy burn!! He’s a good swimmer and would swim next to a parent in a lane but it doesn’t seem allowed.

That was me. That is the age we allow children to be at the pool by themselves so we didn’t change it. We have had close to 7 year olds there for lap swim at the same time as a parent and let it go. It’s kind of a common sense decision. That age can also do “laps” in our shallower pool.

agree- but recognize this is the Governor's rule, not the pool's rule. Our pool is open- it's basically empty, very few people are signing up to swim (it's set at 13+ for lap swimming).

I meant for our pool. Regardless, the governor's rule allows 10 or less on deck. For pools with 6 lanes, that's 6 swimmers max. It seems dumb that almost every session of swimming, there are empty lanes when you have members who would love those spots. Why not release the spots to anyone the last 90-120 minutes before the hour is to begin? This way, it is more likely that they will be filled rather than empty. (And don't count those last minute sign ups against the members' max allowed.)

oh- you have members who want to lap swim, but they are not allowed? We are allowing anyone to take any open slot- no matter how many times they have swum- for day of swimming. You are only allowed 2 advance sign ups- but unlimited day of sign ups.

Ours limits the sign ups to 5 per family unit every 2 weeks. Every hour since it’s opened, lanes Ramain unused.

The beaches vs pool comparison is what perplexes me:

9. Public Beaches
All public beaches as defined in § 10.1-705 of the Code of Virginia may remain open to
individual and family recreational activity, in addition to exercise
and fishing. All such
public beaches, with the exception of the beaches in the City of Virginia Beach, must
comply with the requirements below.
a. Require beachgoers to practice physical distancing of at least six feet between
each person unless they are with members of the same household.
b. Prohibit gatherings of more than 50 people.
c. Prohibit group sports, alcohol, tents, groupings of umbrellas, and other activities
and items that attract gatherings.
d. Prohibit entertainment and programming that generate gatherings.
e. All common areas that encourage gatherings, such as pavilions, gazebos, playsets,
and picnic areas must remain closed. This does not apply to fishing piers.

There is going to be a revolt by every mother in Virginia Over this pool situation - will they all survive yes, but come on - you have tortured then with no school for three months and are now banning a safe activity where your children bathe in bleach??

Yes. I’ve lived in Virginia Beach before and there were community pools there, I know there are some in Richmond suburbs. I am surprised these guidelines are written like they have no idea how big of a culture it is.

Separate from this, at some point people need to make their own decisions. If you aren’t ready to go out and do stuff and don’t feel safe, then stay home. I have zero concerns with afternoons at the pool for my family.

The beach vs pool guidelines make no sense! It’s like they forgot private community pools exist.

Tortured them? They are universally applied rules

Our pool set the limit at 15yrs for now, saying in part it's about younger kids not only being able to swim laps but also respect social distancing requirements. They've said they hope to reconsider but this is the starting point.
